It was Sophocles!

Sophocles was the master of Greek tragedy.  He wrote as many as 120 plays, winning up to 24 of 30 competitions, but only 7 today survive.  These plays, primarily surrounding the characters Oedipus and Antipode, are considered some of the greatest works of tragedy ever written.  Sophocles served Athens as a politician under Pericles, and was renowned widely in Ancient Greece.
