Yeah, because there are so many holiday periods, and one is more exciting than the other.

I mean seriously, this is the sort of thing you buy for novelty value, but given the big number of "Heavy Metal X-Mas" albums that have been released lately, that has definitely worn off.

Plus, Roy Z is gonna produce it. [sarcasm]He's done such a great job on the two previous Halford albums, this alone will make it great already.[/sarcasm]

I'm sorry, but how did he not do a good job on Resurrection? Sure, Crucible sounded like crap but Resurrection had a really good production.

Just listen to tracks like Made in Hell or Night Fall, or even The One You Love to Hate (although that one has very sharp and cutting guitars and a lot of power indeed). It sounds like Rob's voice is locked in a straight jacket. We all know he can do better than that, and apart from the weak songwriting, I blame the way too tame production. This is supposed to rip, it's supposed to roar, but instead it just blubbers.

In fact, he did better than that. Had they used the recordings published on Live Insurrection instead of pasting crowd noises over them, the album would have been just a step short of amazing. As it is now, it's a good album that wears off with each listen. Not a sign of good production if you ask me.

I'll have to correct you there. Only the songs they didn't perform on the tour are recorded in the studio (i.e. Light Comes Out of Black)..

Hell, I have like 8 bootlegs where he sings Resurrection and all those, and every single one of them could've been on Live Insurrection.

Funny, I've never noticed. I guess we all hear different things. Anyway, I love Resurrection. Too bad I just misplaced my ltd edition with the Halford poster I was gonna put on my wall. I'm sad.  :(

Have you heard the remastered by the way? Maybe you'd like that production better.

And the liner notes even admit that one was done in the studio.

I used to love it. I used to have it on heavy rotation a few years back, then forgot all about it, put it on again a few weeks ago and wondered what I thought was so great about it. It's not a bad album, it has some good moments such as Slow Down or Silent Screams. Both of those definitely win on Insurrection though, live or not.

I've got the limited edition in excellent quality, including poster and postcard, even though I got it used for five Euros. Given that you're such a huge fan, I would consider parting with it.

Yes I know, I fucked up when I wrote that. I meant it was a studio track.

Also, you've got a PM.  :)

Yay!  Christmas songs!!

Fuck the dick out of this.  Unless there's something really interesting, I'm not sure I'll even steal it from the internet.

Meh. I'm interested in the new material, although I'm not sure what to make of the whole "special holiday release" business. Christmas is just another holiday, folks.

And I heftily disagree with Perun on the production of Resurrection (ok no case for Crucible). Roy Z did a great job on that, and he has done great jobs with other productions as well (Bruce for example). I would say just for Halford's vocals and Roy Z's production its worth looking into, regardless of on the internet or buying it.

I'm not saying that the production on Resurrection is horrible, just that it's tame and mellow. With the notable exception of The One You Love To Hate, the guitars have no kick and the music doesn't have sufficient power to blow me away. It's just a disappointment after Chemical Wedding, which had an amazingly dense, heavy and powerful atmosphere.

Well as I said, the production isn't the only thing. I feel that apart from a few exceptions, the songwriting is uncreative and average. Nothing that leaps out and kicks arse. Basically the songs are good but not great except perhaps Slow Down.

Slow Down? That's one of the weaker tracks I think. Boring chorus.

This is the first time ever that I see someone not being that happy with the production of that particular album. It's one of Roy Z's most heralded productions. His assets -well produced drums & guitars- are well presented on Resurrection (esp. the drums sound awesome!), and I never felt that Halford's voice sounded weak in the mix.

The songwriting is another matter. Weaker songs are imo esp. the more commercial sounding ones on the 2nd half:

Slow Down, Twist, Temptation, Drive

Still not terrible but they lack the edge of the others.

Hell's Last Survivor & Sad Wings Of Destiny! Now we're talking! That stuff should've been on the album. Alas...

Not in the mix. In general. He doesn't seem to live up to his own abilities.
