So this year all of the queen albums are supposed to be remastered. I don't have any of their albums and I will probably get some. So what should I start with? I think I want to start with Night At The Opera but what are their other good albums?

Sheer Heart Attack is a must-have. Queen II is also awesome. OGRE BATTLE

For the middle period, News Of The World is good. Jazz and The Game have good songs, but aren't as strong overall.

Of the later albums, A Kind Of Magic is probably my favorite.

Each one.

As a hard rock fan, you will get the most from their first seven albums: Queen, Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack, A Night at the Opera, A Day at the Races, News of the World and Jazz. My personal favourite is Innuendo, though - that's a monster of an album. You might want to stay away from their eighties efforts at first, because they tend to be quite poppy, although there are a lot of gems on them. Like anyone else, you will probably have your biggest problems with Hot Space, which is in parts very funky, and not quite what would be, or indeed was, expected from them. But even that one has a lot of great songs, especially Put out the Fire, which is a classic Queen rocker.

The problem is that Queen has several phases, each of which have their own distinct sound. Their first three albums probably have the most appeal to metalheads, because they are very hard, very heavy and also rather experimental. Sheer Heart Attack is the most polished and popular of those, but I personally think the first two are more exciting. If you want a more "classic" hard rock Queen, go for the next batch, A Night at the Opera through Jazz. Those are the albums that made Queen the quintessential rock band of the seventies. I think their creative genius is echoed on Innuendo, albeit with a much more mature attitude, which is what appeals to me. Their 1980 album, The Game, is what turned many hard rock fans off the band, but it remains one of their best-known and most popular albums. The same goes for The Works, A Kind of Magic and The Miracle: Unfairly despised by hard rock fans for their poppy sound, yet very much remembered in the general public. I think they are all great (maybe The Miracle has a little too much filler).

So, I don't know, if you want to play it safe go for Sheer Hear Attack, if you want to know what brilliance defined is, go for Innuendo.

News of the World has been my favorite, but I think all the 70s albums are really strong.  The 80s material is more hit and miss IMO, but still has some really good music.

I gotta admit it's been a while since I last had a Queen session. I'm giving News of the World a spin right now, and I forgot how great it is.

My favorites are the first album and News of the World.  I agree generally that the 70s albums are the ones to have, but I would include The Game on the list of albums to have.  It is pretty strong top to bottom.  The title track and Save Me are among my favorite Queen songs.  It's also the first Queen album I ever heard when I was a kid.

Can it get any more heavenly?
No.  That might be my favorite Queen song, period.  But it gets stiff competition from It's Late.  Speaking of which, have you folks seen the movie, Observe and Report?  I can't decide whether it is an incoherent mess or comedy genius (I had the same reaction to Napoleon Dynamite).  I lean toward the latter.  Anyway, It's Late figures prominently in the final scenes.

I haven't seen it, but any film with that song in it ought to be great.

Kinda scary, I'm having it on as we speak. One of their greatest hard rock numbers ever.  :shred:

Definitely. When it came out, that was what sparked my interest in the band.

I love the Flash Gordon soundtrack precisely because it is that cheesy - just like the film. Plus, some of the tunes (e.g. Football Fight, Vultan's Theme) bloody rock!

I think I will check out Sheer Heart Attack and Night At The Opera. Thanks for the input everyone.

That was half the awesomeness of the Highlander series.

I love Queen, but all I have are 'Greatest Hits' albums.  I love 'Absolute'.

I did have Innuendo on Cassette, and that is a very good album.

I don't know much of Queen (especially the seventies are obscure to me), apart from many of their hits, of course. :)

Some years ago I bought the second album, because a collegue raved about it, but the production scared me off really (bad!).

I loved some of the singles from that era.

My favourite Queen songs that come to mind: Innuendo, I Want It All (my alltime favourite track: I bought the vinyl single, and played it over and over again; the b-side Hang on in There displays some fine hard rock as well), Show Must Go On.

I also remember that I was very much into Radio Ga Ga when it came out, so they surely made impact in my youth. Queen was a fine bridge, leading a kid from the pop genre to hard rock.

Other memories: Invisible Man (that bassline), Who Wants To Live Forever.

Every so often, I hear an old Queen song and think - "Bloody hell, that was good". But I have never, ever thought to buy a Queen album. Not sure why.

I do think, however, that if I was ever to start I would start with "The Game".

A real shame that you let that put you off, because that is one of their most creative and exciting albums.
