Global survey of Iron Maiden's fans

Meaning, the left-right scale is actually nonsense

True, I had some problems answering that too.  By Finnish political standards, I am far right, whereas in America, I would pretty much be considered an extreme leftist.  I replied centre in the end, as a compromise.

Yeah, as I see it, in America you mostly have moderate right and extreme right. :D

I'm curious though, could you explain the Finnish standards a bit, what's the right and what's the left agenda?

There's also an intersting thing that nationalists in Scotland and Wales tend to leftists, while English ones are usually on the right.

Tbh, that makes sense, it wouldnt make sense for them to offer the same kinds of ideals as the English if they are trying to be nationalist.

It goes to show that it is virtually impossible to set-up a survey that applies to the globe.

Okay.  If left is San Francisco, and right is New York, then libertarian is Sydney, Australia.  Meaning, the left-right scale is actually nonsense :)

I like that anology, LC.

Is a libertarian on the left or right?  I put "nowhere," but that's not entirely accurate.

Same here.  The "nowhere" does make us sound like we have no political affiliations or values.  We're anarchists.  :D

Well, Finland's politics are overall very leftist in contrast to world standards.  The system is completely different from the American system; right now, there are eight parties in the parliament of varying left/right orientations as well as other agendas (such as the green party, the swedish peoples' party, etc). The Finnish right is pretty much American left (Democrat).  The left is almost communist; in fact, the party was originally formed by a coalition of leftist parties, including the communist party.

Its similar in England, except there only really 3 major parties (although there are several smaller ones). I wouldnt say England's politics are really leftist.....Id say they're as close to centre as can be possible (i doubt you could ever truly have a centered party...although all this left/right stuff is nonsense anyway).
I think its pretty remarkable that America only has 2 major parties and (seemingly) no other parties.

USA does have other parties, with libertarians being the third largest.  However, most liberatarians I've heard of would consider a libertarian vote a throw away, hence the larger stacking of the other two parties.  If my memory serves me, I think as much as 20% of Americans consider themselves libertarian.  That's a large swing vote for either Repulicans or Democrats.

Yes, with that bit you quoted, I didnt mean there werent any other parties, just that theres only two that seem to matter to anyone. Whereas in England, at least the Liberal Democrats have a little bit larger strength (although, not very much). Many people around here voice the idea of voting Lib Dem, but always seem to avoid doing so for some reason......then they complain about how stupid Labour and the Tories are, after voting for one of them.  ::)

Hi,

Thanks for your great remarks about the political categories.

I just wanted to precise that as I'm in a French University, I've first made the French questionnaire that fits with the French model of survey.
In France, the concept of "Left and Right wings" makes a lot of sense but thanks to your messages I realize that it is totally stupid for other countries.
So I'm sorry for the people who cannot find their right place on that scale. Your comments will help me and the other people who will do the same kind of survey with other bands. They should be able to avoid this "pitfall".

Thanks again.

Until now, 465 fans have answered the questionnaire. I really hope that we will reach the 1000 !

Have a nice day,

Best regards,

Jean-Philippe

Done, also started it a few days ago but accidently hit enter by mistake, so you might have half a questionaire filled out by me previously

Japanese fans...

Hi,

We have reached the 600 participants. It would be enough but I'm dreaming of a thousand... The only problem now, is the lack of answers from Japan and Brazil.

I've only received 6 answers from Brazil... It's a bit disappointing when you think about the crowd having attended "Rock in Rio"...

I've posted today a message on the "Brazilian website" (By the way, online translators are pretty useful) and I'm looking forward to see the reaction of the fans.

For Japan, if you would have any Japanese friend who can "surf" on the internet, it would be great if he/she could post a message about the survey on the following website : http://www.geocities.jp/maidenjapan_official/

Thanks again for your help in this adventure,

Best regards,

Jean-Philippe

Hmm, interesting. So you have stats on how many people from each country then?
What are the percentages? Im wondering if there are many from the newer countries in the Maiden-obsessesion, (e.g. India and the Middle-east) or the long-standing countries (like Australia). Although, it all depends on who everyone here has told to answer it rather than an accurate representation of countries' interest.

That's it, I'm moving to Finland!
