Had to look up the picture to understand what was happening here and apparently the wounded dog defended the herd from a pack of wolves (is what it says on all the descriptions I could find, who knows if true) and the sheep is "comforting" the dog.
 
It was not a pack of wolves, it was a single wolf, at least participating in the attack. Dog is not wounded, the blood is wolf's. Since wolf will go in directly for the neck of the flock's guardian if it senses an opportunity, the spike collar is intentionally put there. The dog is not hurt, if it were hurt, he would've been attended to and not photographed. The blood splatters are possibly from wolf impaling himself and then viciously shaking for release and flight. Dog's body is basically untouched, which wouldn't be the case if it were attacked by a pack.

So the dog did his job flawlessy, the situation was rather tense for us humans to understand but sheep is very appreciative.
 

This was fun and it actually must have took a lot of work for something that's more or less a throwaway joke.

Also, as someone commented below, his Mustaine impression indeed is hauntingly accurate.
