According to Shi'ite Islam, he is the 12th successor of Muhammad who went into obscurity in 874, to return on Judgement Day to restore divine justice to the world and punish all the unbelievers. To give you an idea of the people who believe in this sort of thing, when Ayatollah Khomeini returned to Iran in 1979, he was hailed by his supporters as the returning Imam.
