I copied Per's idea (hope he doesn't mind!) and decided to make a topic for one or two bands I like which hardly get attention here.
This one is for people who can (or will) appreciate black/viking/folk metal, and for people who dig melodic guitar work in general and harvest awesome riffs at breakfast. For this first post Chartwell inspired me when he talked about Falconer.
Falconer? I prefer predecessor Mithotyn. Mithotyn dissolved in 1999 while Stefan Weinerhall and Karsten Larsson eventually formed Falconer. Mithotyn sounded less sweet, more atmospheric, dark, aggressive and displayed some great guitar work. Biggest difference: Don't expect clean vocals though. Black metal screams instead. So it's less opera. I think they have been a big influence on many viking/folk metal bands who walk away with their ideas these days. Imho Mithotyn had the greatest riffs of them all. So focus on the music and you can stand the vocals!
Albums:
In the Sign of the Ravens (1997)
King of the Distant Forest (1997)
Gathered Around the Oaken Table (1999)
A few songs:

Lost in the Mist http://youtu.be/Pal7NfijfMw (more acoustic guitar here!)
Masters of Wilderness http://youtu.be/oHzLFIlajJc

Chartwell said:Hey Jupz, wanted to expand on the Falconer albums, I couldn't figure out who they reminded me of but today it hit me - they're like a male version of Nightwish (with Tarja, not the new one). Very similar in terms of their power/symphonic approach, very melody driven, with dashes of Tull and Gamma Ray. A very interesting band.
