Favorite Non-Maiden Lyrics

Couldn't find a thread for this, feel free to direct me to it if there is one.

Pretty self explanatory, what are your favorite lyrics outside of Maiden?

I find Frank Turner has some excellent ones:
Photosynthesis:

"Oh, maturity's a wrapped up package deal, so it seems
And ditching teenage fantasy means ditching all your dreams
All your friends and peers and family solemnly tell you you will
Have to grow up, be an adult, yeah, be bored and unfulfilled
Oh, but no one's yet explained to me exactly what's so great
About slaving 50 years away on something that you hate
About meekly shuffling down the path of mediocrity
Well, if that's your road, then take it, but it's not the road for me"

"And if all you ever do with your life
Is just photosynthesize
Then you deserve every hour of your sleepless nights
That you waste wondering when you're gonna die"

And Love Ire and Song:

"Leave the mourning to the morning
Yeah pain can be killed
With aspirin tablets and vitamin pills
But memories of hope, and of glorious defeat
Are a little bit harder to beat"

Also Map of the Problematique by Muse:

"And no one thinks they are to blame
Why can't we see
That when we bleed we bleed the same?"

Obviously these are just a couple of many.

You could basically just post every line from that album, it’s the greatest release in music history for a reason.

But my second favorite album, The Call of the Wretched Sea by Germany’s doom wonders Ahab, is also a fantastic record with some great lyrics, sometimes taken directly out of Moby Dick. I actually annotated every line for Genius:
https://genius.com/albums/Ahab/The-call-of-the-wretched-sea

Metallica's Escape:
"Rape my mind and destroy my feelings
Don't tell me what to do
I don't care now, cause I'm on my side
And I can see through you
Feed my brain with your so called standards
Who says that I ain't right?
Break away from your common fashion
See through your blurry sight"

Iced Earth's Last December:
"Take the final step
Heed the final call
Together we are strong
Divided we must fall
Teenage suicide
Our only way out
Together we might live
Divided we must fall"

Dio's Rainbow in the Dark:
"When there's lightning
You know it always brings me down
Cause it's free and I see that it's me
Who's lost and never found"
[...]
"Do your Demons, do they ever let you go?
When you've tried, do they hide deep inside?
Is it someone that you know?
You're just a picture
You're an image caught in time
We're a lie, you and I
We're words without a rhyme"

Black Sabbath's Paranoid:
"All day long, I think of things, but nothin' seems
To satisfy
Think I'll lose my mind if I don't find something
To pacify

Can you help me
Occupy my brain?
Oh, yeah!

I need someone to show me the things in life
That I can't find
I can't see the things that make true happiness
I must be blind

Make a joke an' I will sigh an' you will laugh
An' I will cry
Happiness, I cannot feel an' love, to me
Is so unreal"

"What I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you?

What I've felt, what I've known
Sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there? 'Cause I'm the one who waits for you
Or are you unforgiven, too?"

- The Unforgiven 2, Metallica

Always loved them because they reflected how I felt during a really difficult period last year and thus latched onto me. In fact the whole song does. Such an underated and forgotten gem

I really like the "The Whispering", a song by Leif Edling's (of Candlemass-fame) sideproject The Doomsday Kingdom. The song is fairly straightforward, and Leif clearly isn't much of a singer, but the lyrics... damn.

"I peek through the keyhole to lost yesterdays
One eye is closed, one is kind
I see longships and wanderers, small twisted minds
In the black heart they're all still alive

A ghost whispers my name
A little bit louder each day
A ghost whispers my name
You're closer and closer, they say"

That's some creepy shit. Absolutely perfect.

Martin Walkyier always wrote thoughtful, pun-ridden lyrics for Skyclad which were consistently great. One song that comes to mind where he kept it more serious and poetic was "You Lost My Memory" from the album Folkémon:

Unstoppable force and immovable object,
repel one another when by chance colliding.
The Brownian motion within this love potion,
ensures our opinions are always dividing.
I am from Mars my dear;
you hail from Venus.
A meeting star-crossed
like the Sun and the Moon.
Destined to let this cruel world
come between us.
Our last kiss eclipsed by a shadow at noon.

A rose that is built
out of music by moonlight;
petals stained ruby with nightingale blood.
Cast down in disgust
to be crushed by a cart-wheel,
because of mere trivia misunderstood.

We quest for a grail of illusive perfection,
each hoping we'll find it some glorious day.
Yet gaze with remorse at our jaded reflection,
that looks like The Picture Of Dorian Gray.

Siamese Twins who were joined at the heart.
Love's an affliction without a known remedy.
Blunt-bladed fate
deemed to cleave us apart;
Emotional surgery pays no indemnity.
Some seek release with effete anaesthesia,
others adapt to the role of sworn enemy.
You found nepenthe in cheap, sweet amnesia;
It was far easier losing my memory.

You lost my memory

And the nightingale sang:
"Sing love's lament
with a thorn at your breast.
Impaled by her barb;
cruel and unforgiving.
A million dead poets would gladly attest;
heart-ache's a keepsake
to remind us we're living."

Siamese Twins who were joined at the heart.
Love's an affliction without a known remedy.
Blunt-bladed fate
deemed to cleave us apart;
Emotional surgery pays no indemnity.
Some seek release with effete anaesthesia,
others adapt to the role of sworn enemy.
You found nepenthe in cheap, sweet amnesia;
It was far easier losing my memory.

You lost my memory

I'm missing out loads, but these are some that came to mind:

Walls of thought, strong and high
As my castle crumbles with time
I think of you, Oh yes I do

Alice in Chains - "Sea of Sorrow"

You don't wanna hurt me
But see how deep the bullet lies
Unaware that I'm tearing you asunder
There's a thunder in our hearts
So much hate for the ones we love
Tell me we both matter, don't we?

Kate Bush - "Running Up That Hill"

Only came outside to watch the night fall with the rain
I heard you making patterns rhyme
Like some new romantic looking for the TV sound
You'll see I'm right some other time

Duran Duran - "Planet Earth"

A child is born with no state of mind
Blind to the ways of mankind
God is smilin' on you but he's frownin' too
'cause only God knows what you gonna do

Grandmaster Flash - "The Message"

And it feels, And it feels like
Heaven's so far away
And it feels, Yeah it feels like
The world has grown cold
Now that you've gone away

The Offspring - "Gone Away"

Disappear like Man was never here

Metallica - "Spit Out The Bone"

All because of you, I believe in angels
Not the kind with wings, No not the kind with halos
The kind that bring you home when come becomes a strange place
I'll follow your voice, All you have to do is shout it out

Rise Against - "The Good Left Undone"

Take my love, what is yours
Hold me close and know despite the distance I can not ignore
We were searching, broken, we wanted to live
We will never be the same

Royal Thunder - "Blue"

Had enough of reinventing memories
Living in the shadow of your charm
The shrapnel of your insults bury deeper
Than confidence can ever overcome

Therapy? - "Unbeliever"

But we all know the best lyric ever written is in Shakira's "Wherever, Whenever"

"Lucky that my breasts are small and humble so you don't confuse them with mountains"

:D

I have way too many of them so I try to keep this short.

Washington is Next! by Megadeth:
Disengage their minds, sabotage their health
Promote sex and war and violence in the kindergartens
Blame the parents and teachers; it's their fault, "Annuit Coeptis"

Keep the public undisciplined 'til nothing left is sacred and
The "have-not's" get hooked and have to go to the "have's" just to cop a fix

What's yours is mine and what's mine is mine too
If you shake my hand better count your fingers

Dead Bite

My World
by Metallica
Not only do I not know the answer
I don't even know what the question is

"Oh how I wonder, oh how I worry,
And I would dearly like to know,
How all this wonder of earthly plunder,
Will leave us anything to show?

And our time is flying,
See the candle burning low,
Is the new world rising
From the shambles of the old? "

- Led Zeppelin, "The Rover"

I do understand though, basically what she meant by that ;)

Also bear in mind that she didn't really speak English then, and was using a dictionary to translate. So I think overall it was a fairly good effort.

Wherever, Whenever/Suerte in either language makes me uncomfortable. It sounds less like an expression of undying love and more like utter humility and servitude.

I must admit I've never considered it from that angle, but then I've never studied it that closely either. I had more of a problem with Rules:

"Use your eyes only to look at me,
Use your mouth only to kiss my lips,
We are branches of the same old tree,
You can laugh only if you laugh with me,
You can cry only if you cry for me,
Don't forget that you're condemned* to me."

Unrealistic-and-a-half, as well as cringeworthy (to me anyway). But then I don't listen to Shakira for the lyrics :D

*I think what she probably meant was "committed" ...

Some of Bruce's solo albums are my absolute favorites, but since we're in a new album mood - here are some from The Mandrake Project:

I cross the shining seas
Eyes of creatures follow me
Moonlight guides us on a steady course
Afterglow of Ragnarok
Becomes the shadow of the dawn
From the night the sun will rise again

The sun begins its journey, taking us from day to night

I am the wizard of your heart

We are building a bridge, so you people can live

Against the sun, there are shapes in the fire
Around the stars are blue and grey
Halos, forever
Into the light

A frozen river, a river of souls
Let your tears fall on the ice
In the shadow of the gods
Somewhere there is hope
In this heartless world, together
To come again on this new earth
Once more, forever, evermore

Journey on beyond the stars

One drop creates the light
One drop will fill the night

Here in the dark forest
Where angels live and angels sleep

"I gave my love a goodnight kiss
I tried to take a late night piss
But the toilet moved, so again I missed"

"Rain Street" by The Pogues: Shane MacGowan on top form right there
