1. Dark Discovery
2. December 26th
3. Closed Eyes
4. Blackened Dawn
5. When The River Calls

That's great man!
The singer tries to sound like Phil Anselmo, John Bush or even Eddie Veder here.
That's some description.

Solitude Dominance Tragedy (1999)
R-3373211-1327840461.jpg
Only a year after their debut Evergrey released their sophomore album Solitude Dominance Tragedy. The difference with The Dark Discovery is huge! On all levels there's improvement: the production is crystal clear and the songwriting is more mature. Toms voice sounds alot better balanced in comparison with his vocals on The Dark Discovery.

Solitude Within
Great proggy riffs in the intro, chuggy ones and a piano: the first minute of this song allready predicts a banger! When the guitars stop, the piano keeps playing and Tom enters the scene with his emotional vocals. The first verse is followed by a nice long melodic Maidenish guitar riff with a tone straight out of Somewhere In Time before the second verse where the chuggy guitars return! Very emotional chorus and the Maiden riff. I love the little bass fills here (headphones!) right before a bridge and the chorus. The song evolves with some drum fills, an Irish sounding softer instrumental section with ulean pipes, short distorted riffing before exploding in a heavier part and then the repeated chorus. This is one of my favourite Evergrey songs (dare I guess it´s @Vaenyr ´s alltime favourite Evergrey song?) and definitely the first highlight of the album. 10/10

Nosferatu

Thrashy riffing and sinister sounding synths in the intro. Next we get chuggy riffs with the synths, the riffs getting heavier and a short guitar solo before the song calms down. Accoustic guitar and Toms vocals, a bridge with proggy riffs, nice synths in the background and a faster chorus sung by Tom and Carina.
Proggy instrumental section with extremely tasty riffing. After the heavier second verse the bridge and chorus follows again. Alot is happening now: extra vocal layers, fills and riffs. Fantastic guitar solo, slow beautiful part with a nice symbiosis of guitar and synths. Drums introducing the big finale with the chorus. Another amazing song! 10/10

The Shocking Truth

A spoken taperecorder, piano and haunting cutting riff. What a cool intro! This song is about alien abduction, a theme they will explore further in the next album. Tom sings this as if he was really abducted by aliens. The verses are quite calm, more like a ballad although this is far from being a ballad of course. In the interludes you hear other people telling about their abduction experience. The chilling synths are quite effective. I love the tom fills in the second verse.
In the bridge we hear Tom and the keyboards before the song bursts and then a short guitar solo, a little heavier riffing, to let the song end calm as it began. Really awesome. 9/10

A Scattered Me
A long very proggy intro with all classic Evergrey elements: synths and chuggy riffing.
Great riff after the first verse and dual guitar during the chorus and right before the shredding solo section. Nice midtempo chugging after the final chorus. 8/10

She Speaks To The Dead

No this isn´t The X Factor but it is the sample of the monks Maiden used on Sign Of The Cross allright. Ferocious riffs! This song is the little brother (or sister) of Nosferatu. I love the synths during the verses. Father...she speaks to the dead! Very effective chorus. After the second one we get a brilliant gothic like instrumental section followed by a chugfest with guitar solo´s.
The outro is magnificent! 10/10

When Darkness Falls

Haunting synths and spoken words in the intro and weird vocal effects of Tom in the verses.
Heavy chorus! This is prog goth or goth prog or how would you like to call it? Nice instrumental section in different tempos. This is actually Evergrey´s Bark At The Moon. 7/10

Words Mean Nothing

Ballad time! Piano and Tom are the stars on this one. How he sings here is just amazing. What an expression. 9/10

Damnation

Heavy proggy intro! This is one of the most progressive Evergrey songs. Some nice synths right before the decent chorus. After the second one we get an instrumental section with some tempo changes and a short solo and Carina and Tom. I really love how they sing "Fade away" together and the song fades out. 9/10

The Corey Curse

This song is about Giles Corey who was accused of witchcraft and crushed to death by the sheriff of Salem. With his dying words he cursed the sheriff and the town. Many believe the curse was real, and resulted in 300 years of ailing sheriffs and a great fire that destroyed much of Salem.
(Thank you Wikipedia!)
Chilling intro with that great guitar tone which reminds me so much of Somewhere In Time (Am I insane or do you guys hear it too?)
Very emotional singing Tom (is there another?)
Nice arpeggios and then the song gets faster.
Fantastic outro which closes this fantastic second Evergrey album! 9/10

After 2 albums this is my Evergrey Top 10:

1. Solitude Within
2. Nosferatu
3. She Speaks To The Dead
4. The Shocking Truth
5. Damnation
6. The Corey Curse
7. Dark Discovery
8. Words Mean Nothing
9. December 26th
10. A Scattered Me

This is a beautiful trend starting to take shape, first Black Sabbath then here. I'll wait to read 4 -5 albums first before start listening. Good things.

Solitude, Dominance, Tragedy time! In the span of only a year Evergrey managed to take almost all the short comings of their debut and improve upon them immensely:

The very first thing you'll notice is the production which is leaps and bounds beyond what we heard on The Dark Discovery. Remember how the keys were mixed far too prominently? They are still a vital part of the overall sound, but they don't drown out the rest of the instruments. Remember how at times you couldn't properly get the guitars to shine? That won't be an issue on this album!

Next, Tom's vocals improved a ton. Anyone who disliked his vocals on the debut should give him another chance. He found a style that he'll carry on for the next few albums (and about the first half of their discography) and he found which keys and ranges fit well for him. We'll hear a lot of his higher range and some much needed aggression. That said, if you don't like how he sounds here then the next albums won't be for you either.

The songwriting is much more mature. The proggy influences take a back seat this time around, but they'll be back on the next album. This one is almost a dark power metal record. We get a lot more variety throughout the individual songs and they seem much more live-friendly or ready. Curious if playing shows influenced how they write music. The vocal lines are better thought out as well and there are plenty of catchy choruses here. The guest vocals are much better incorporated as well.

Let's look at the individual tracks:

Solitude Within
This is the first Evergrey song I've ever heard and as @MindRuler correctly assumed, it is my all-time favorite! Am I that predictable? :D
The song starts out strong with some fast drumming and riffing, flanked by synths that add to the atmosphere without detracting from the rest of the song. We get a tempo change and get a pretty cool phrygian dominant riff (think Powerslave or any other "Egyptian" or oriental sounding scale). We change to a chugging riff before Tom get's a moment to really shine and show off his new found confindence as a vocalist. I adore how he sounds here!
The lead guitars drip with effects while the bass is worming its way beneath it all. The chorus introduces some vocal harmonies but is cut short, before returning to the lead guitars. Right after we get Carina helping out, but this time she doesn't hold back like on the debut; she shows how powerful her voice is.
The instrumental section that follows is pretty different to anything we've heard on their very young discography so far. We get a bit of modal interchange and the keys get to take center stage for a bit. The bridge sees Tom push himself vocally again before returning to the chorus and finally ending the song. Like many songs on this album this one works really well live and if people liked the album they should listen to the live album at some point as well, but maybe wait until we get there chronologically. Easiest 10/10 ever.

Nosferatu
Kinda funny how disconnected the intro is from the rest of the song, but it really works! We get a couple of riffs and even a solo before the vocals first enter, all within the first minute. Once Tom starts singing we get to hear a bit of his lower range, which he wields with more confidence as well. Before you think we have some half ballad at hand the song changes gears again. First we keep the slower tempo while the electric guitars and synths drive the energy, but this changes once the pre-chorus starts. First downside I can think of: The backing vocals in this segment (that keep chanting Nosferatu) are far too low, both from a mix pov as well as the pitches themselves, they're barely audible). The proper chorus is super catchy, features Carina in the backing vocals once again and we also get some fun natural to flat sixth movement in the chord progression. Nothing super impressive, but it sounds great and works in introducing some variety.
Quick instrumental interlude, before going to a verse with some rather clunky lyrics, but both Tom's vocals and the guitar riff underneath are just so damn good that I don't really care about the cheesiness. Time to embrace it!
We get another solo and even a slow twin lead section right after. I think I'll go with a 9/10.

The Shocking Truth
As I mentioned in my review for the debut, songs with vocal samples are somewhat of an Evergrey staple. The subject matter of this song will be revisited in detail on the next album. I'm really glad about this album's production, because the atmosphere in this track is immaculate. We have the piano synths laying the foundation, the palm muted clean guitars filling out the space sonically, before we get to what will eventually reveal itself as the chorus with some string synths, clean guitar chords, more samples and some double bass drum grooves. Plus, instead of the usual 4/4 every second measure gets a couple of extra measures, a trick they already used on the debut, but which works well here too.
We get another round of verse and "chorus", before getting a bridge that name drops the song (and might seem familiar if you look at the third album's title ;) ). Then we return to the chorus, this time in its proper statement with actual vocals, for the remainder of the song. I can see how the lyrics and the samples might seem goofy at first, but the composition is strong enough that I don't really care about the silliness of it all. 7/10.

A Scattered Me
Hey look, it's the cello synth again! The intro is arguably unnecessary but once we're done with that we get a fantastic song. We get a bunch of fantastic riffs and it takes more than the first quarter of the song before we hear any sung vocals. I love Tom's voice, but I wouldn't fault anyone for thinking the guitar work is Evergrey's strongest suit, which is why I believe this song might be pretty popular with anyone here listening to the album for the first time.
The clean guitars during the verse play some notes here and there, quickly dipping outside the song's key, to add interest to an already pretty cool section, before continuing with the catchy chorus. After another round of verse and chorus we get a little interlude including a harpsichord synth, before transforming that interlude riff into a proper backing riff for the solo. Nothing spectacular in that sense, but all the individual parts of the song are great and fit well together. 8/10.

She Speaks To The Dead
Heh, it's the Sign Of The Cross intro-sample. Wouldn't surprise me if that was deliberate, Evergrey are Maiden fans (Tom references Live After Death during their own first live album and they have played acoustic covers of Wasted Years live a few times).
The intro mostly serves to set up the atmosphere, the rest of the song goes in a very different direction. Once the actual musical intro is over we see the guitars adapt what the piano was playing before, which serves both as the backing for a quick solo, and for the verse that is to follow. The chorus has a fascinating structure, with an almost stop-and-go kind of feel, but it's not jarring (at least not to me). We get another quick solo before the next verse starts.
After the next chorus we get an amazing instrumental section that goes through a ton of ideas. We get tempo changes, differences in dynamics, an energetic 12/8 section, a few solos and some twin leads. Anyone who appreciates great guitar work will find something to like here! 9/10.

When Darkness Falls
Another of my favorites. Lyrically it sounds like a continuation of what we were just listening to, musically we get a very different vibe. I love the phasing effect on Tom's vocals once he starts singing. I adore the chorus! The guitars drive the whole thing with palm muted 16th notes while Tom and a vocal harmony soar over them. We get a prominent bass riff afterwards! Back to mid-tempo stomping for the verse, with some eerie synths that almost sound like a theremin. The band has some fun playing around with the rhythms here, before going back to the chorus.
Instrumental interlude time again! Guitars and synths drive the next section, before we hear another solo and a synth heavy section. Instead of repeating the chorus we get a revisit of the last verse. For the outro we get something similar that we heard on the final track of the debut already, some clean guitars rich in delay playing a few licks while the song slowly fades out. This time it's much more effective though. 10/10.

Words Mean Nothing
Here's the closest thing to a ballad this album has to offer. The harp synth is prominently featured throughout the song, establishing its identity. It drops out for a piano synth for the first verse and chorus, but returns right after. As the song progresses Tom busts out some powerful and emotional vocals. If you like his voice here's a lot to appreciate. The man sings his ass off. The song continues for another minute or so though, letting the keyboard player have some fun with some violin sounds. Nothing too obnoxious or pretentious, nor anything too flashy. I quite like it and think it fits with the song, but I can see how some would like to skip this or think it goes on for too long. 8/10.

Damnation
This song is weird for me. I like it, but I also tend to forget about it quickly. It's the weakest track on the album for me due to that, but it's still not bad. It's certainly the thrashiest song on the album. I love how the bass is worming beneath the guitars in the first verse and it would've sounded even better with a more gritty or gnarly sound; the current one is a bit too smooth for my liking.
The chorus is the best part of the song for me and I like the chord progression chosen. It's even better once Carina joins in and enhances Tom's vocals. I don't much care for the following section but once we return to Carina's backing vocals and a reprise/variation of the chorus things get better. 6/10.

The Corey Curse
And the final track! The title seemed a bit weird before I knew what it was about, but MindRuler thankfully explained that part already. I dore the atmosphere in the intro of the song and how it keeps building up. We get some lead guitars before Tom enters with some harmonized mid register vocals and the closest thing we get to name dropping the album (though I consider the opening track to be the title track).
Second time around the focus is on his higher register again. The song really takes its time before introducting the chorus and we even get a short twin lead section.
The part right after the chorus is fun, where the guitars play a standard 4/4 groove, while the drums thunder away in 12/8 (or rather the bass drum groove is in triplets). Then we get the emotional core of the song, based on the historic event that inspired the song. We see a couple of previous riffs get repeated before the final chorus, an outro riff and then an admittedly pretty annoying and far too long ending, where Tom's final "curse" and a synth stab are repeated for close to a minute for no reason. You can have fun with a delay sound, but that was a bit too much lol. Still an easy 9/10 for me.

My current ranking of Evergrey songs:
1.
Solitude Within
2. When Darkness Falls
3. Closed Eyes
4. The Corey Curse
5. She Speaks To The Dead
6. Nosferatu
7. When The River Calls
8. A Scattered Me
9. Words Mean Nothing
10. Dark Discovery

Curious to see how long the remaining songs from the debut will survive.

Great review @Vaenyr ! Damnation was long time my least favourite of the album but the last couple of years for some reason it clicked and now I really like it. Still only the 5th of the album but this is a masterpiece! The In Search Of Truth album is my personal favourite and I guess around 5 of the songs will shuffle my Top 10 and will kick out all Dark Discovery songs. Interesting to see When Darkness Falls and Closed Eyes so high in yours.

I think my top 10 will change quite a bit over the next 3 to 4 albums and then it'll be a bit stagnant for a while. This is pretty fun though!

Definitely! Also Recreation Day has some amazing stuff I can´t ignore for my Top 10. The Inner Circle has my favourite Evergrey song. Then we have a couple of albums where there aren´t tracks I´d put there. From the latest 5 albums maybe a few songs, we´ll see.

I've heard Nosferatu before. Was it in the GMSC?

Overall this album was a big step up. Much better vocal performance, better riffing, songs actually had some interesting dynamic/structure changes. Reminds me of early Nightwish (this Wishmaster) before they started to lean more on keys rather than guitar riffs. Good stuff!

In Search Of Truth (2001)
Cov-insearch-300.jpg
Evergrey´s third album is a concept album about alien abduction, something they allready wrote about on the previous album (in the song The Shocking Truth) It's the first with new guitar player Henrik Danhage and bassist Michael Håkansson and features Sven Karlsson on keyboards. It's also the first one on the Inside Out label, known for progressive metal. The approach on this one is more progressive than on Solitude Dominance Tragedy but alot of the atmosphere allready found on that record is also present here. This is my personal favourite album by the band and a detailed song review follows later today, tomorrow or at least at the end of this week.

Solitude, Dominance, Tragedy
Holy shit what a difference a year makes! A real producer showed up for this one and thank Dio, because it's light years better than the debut. The songwriting is a bit more refined (but still has some room to grow). The band sounds incredible. Tom sounds good, but his melody construction and lyrics continue to be the thing keeping Evergrey solidly out of the A/S tier.

Solitude Within
The riffs throughout are simply awesome. Cool dynamics, as well. I love the shift into the half-time riff after the opening and it's proggy as hell! Shades of Symphony X's The Serpents Kiss enter here, long before that song even existed. I love the way the vocals come in, and the space allowed for them to shine, but the melodies and lyrics leave a lot to be desired. Tom is really pulling out all the stops on his PASSIONATE VOICE but the vocal lines themselves don't really do much of anything. The chorus is also a dud here, except for when Tom sings the song title. I love the bass during the guitar interlude after the first chorus. The subdued bridge is simply fantastic. I love the dynamics, the flute-sounding keyboard patch, it's all nice. Tom is the weakest part of this song. Good track. Probably like an 8/10.

an Irish sounding softer instrumental section with ulean pipes

Yeah, I'm a sucker for that shit.

Nosferatu
And the riffs keep coming (and so do my Symphony X comparisons). What an opening! It's like Nightwish had a baby with early Symphony X. I wish they stuck in this tone for a little longer as the transition after the intro solo is very jarring. Tom fits much better here, even if the lyrics are still far too wordy. Once again, stellar dynamics throughout. Same goes for the neoclassical section after the chorus. Great bass here, too. Solos are good, keyboards are a bit lame in the post-solo, though. By the end of the song the chorus really kills. Another 8/10.

Yeah, those low vocal chants of "Nosferatu" under the pre-chorus are incredibly weird, but the female refrains are wonderfully cheesy and tasty. I'm beginning to think we need more Carina on these songs...

The Shocking Truth
It only took two songs for the spoken word samples/FX to reappear! A nice moody intro about aliens, I think. I love the watery, reverbed and delayed guitar under the first verse. Tom's quieter voice works really here. I expect that Evergrey become a quiet piano verse, heavy chorus band in their future. There's a moment when Tom allows himself to do a clean vocal run in the second verse at the end of the line when he sings "the frustration, the hurt, the fearrrrr-nooooo-oh-oh" that I really love. I hope he does some more these Dio-ish trails! Gotta say: this song would be vastly improved by removing the spoken word sections. It really kills the vibe. It's unfortunate that there's not really a true chorus here to latch on to, because the song lacks direction. I'd go 5/10 here. Remove the constant talking and it might be a 6-7.

A Scattered Me
Ah, more spoken vocal FX. Blarg. This one is lamer because it's clearly Tom vocal effected down. Nevermind that, though, because the intro is absolutely awesome! The section from about :17-1:17 is the best Evergrey music I've heard so far, from the keyboard drops (prog Nightwish) to the heavy riff to the wacky syncopated riff run to the start-stop riffing and insane drumming at the beginning of the verse...it's stellar. The keyboard effects in the verse are a bit wonky, but I love Tom's passion here. Great chorus, too. The low vocal harmony in the second verse is a nice touch. Love that pre-chorus riff. The harmonized guitar bit after the second chorus reminds me of Iced Earth, in a good way. Nice solo, too, though it feels a bit chaotic. This certainly isn't Evergrey's best bridge yet, but it works for the song and what a song it is. Great, concise ending! Easy highlight. 10/10.

I love Tom's voice, but I wouldn't fault anyone for thinking the guitar work is Evergrey's strongest suit, which is why I believe this song might be pretty popular with anyone here listening to the album for the first time.
Absolutely. As I mentioned on the previous writeup, I think Tom has a good voice, but the guitars are legitimately impressive in both playing and composition.

She Speaks to the Dead
Okay guys, come on. This talking shit is so lame. Anyway, here's hoping it's only in the intro. Some nice spooky gothic piano, chanting and whispering kick this one off. It's very nice and dramatic. I dig it. The full stop for an a cappella line is a bit jarring, but it works the best out of their jarring transitions. The main riff is cool, solo is solid, and the heavier verse kicks in with gusto. I'm not sure if the chorus works or not? I think I like it? It's definitely messy, but in a good way. Alright...it's bridge time...what are we gonna do...syncopated chugging paired with insane proggy scale runs?! LET'S GO. Oh, and then a moody drop into half-time with a big, epic solo? Ok, you've won me over. Take my money. WAIT. WE'RE BUILDING ON THE HALF-TIME WITH PALM-MUTED CHUGS AND THEN ADDING DOUBLE BASS AND ANOTHER SOLO?! AND THEN WE'RE TOPPING IT ALL OFF WITH THE TURNAROUND RIFFS FROM WHERE EAGLES DARE?! I hope Evergrey never stop writing bridges like this. Honestly, this song is probably a 7-8/10, but the bridge instantly makes it a 9/10.

I honestly did not pick up on that being the same as Sign Of The Cross, at all. Very cool! And makes sense especially with that bridge riff that sounds (to me at least) a lot like Where Eagles Dare.

I'll be back shortly with Part 2.

Shades of Symphony X's The Serpents Kiss enter here, long before that song even existed.
Gotta check that one out then!
The subdued bridge is simply fantastic. I love the dynamics, the flute-sounding keyboard patch, it's all nice.
Evergrey are the kings of awesome bridges!
What an opening! It's like Nightwish had a baby with early Symphony X.
There's a song on the next album with alot of Nightwish vibes as well!

When Darkness Falls
Bringing it all the way down with a beating heart 808, we get...wait for it...more stupid effected talking. The vocal effects carry over into the main vocals, though, with a very strange phaser effect. I'm not a fan. It's a shame because the chorus is phenomenal, maybe the best so far on this record! Luckily, verse two is back to normalcy and it's great (though the keyboard is distracting). The bridge, as usual, is quite good, though the angular riffing in the first bit is stock. The second half groove with the guitar solo is great. I wish the solos were mixed louder, though! Ultimately this is a song let down by the impulse to add too many effects (keyboard patch is seriously grating). 6/10

Words Mean Nothing

More moody, quiet keyboard to start this one - and it's a modified version of the main arpeggio of Symphony X's Lady of the Snow! The vocal melodies aren't doing much help here as they feel a bit stilted. Oddly enough, I think Tom sounds less passionate when he's trying to be quiet and soulful. The "I'm gonna fly/roll/thunder" part is nice enough. I don't know. It's just a power ballad but without anything really catchy to anchor it. Certainly the low point of the album. 5/10

Damnation

The thrashiest track on the record by a mile and they've got the pick squeals to prove it! I like the main riff a lot, especially that twisty turnaround. Verses are fine, chorus is decent and a bit different from their usual, but the star of the show here is that pre-chorus riff that is literally the first half of Symphony X's Walls of Babylon (minus the incredibly cool double bass part SX throw in). The bridge is a Phrygian riff fest followed by some grooving and wailing that sounds great, as usual (Carina is dope). Honestly, hearing her belt "fades away" makes me wish she were a co-lead singer. Decent song, great ending. 8/10

The Corey Curse

Ooooooh, a bass groove! I love the intro here. The keyboard is working overtime in the atmosphere department and the guitar lead is delightfully tasteful and bluesy. The way they build layers is fantastic, especially when the horror-movie rhythm guitar arpeggio clicks in. The transition to the verse is perfect and Tom sounds good. There isn't really a chorus here, or if there is it's not memorable. The neoclassical harmonized guitar section is awesome as is the syncopated chugging part in the bridge where Tom's vocals get a bit aggro. This song is fine, but I don't think it ever gets better than the intro. The noise at the end is obnoxious. 7/10

Overall, this album is a massive improvement in everything. If the band keeps this exact template but just hones in on writing better lyrics and melodies, they could be great.

In Search of Truth
The concept here is less of a story and more of a theme regarding one man's emotions over being abducted by aliens. In theory, I should love this album. It's definitely on the proggier side of riffing, I'm a massive fan of The X-Files, and there is more sharpness to the songwriting. And yet...something doesn't fully hit for me here. I remember the last time I attempted to listen to Evergrey I started with this album because it is heralded as their absolute best work and after spinning it a few times...I just didn't get it. I still don't think I get it, but let's find out together, shall we?

The Masterplan
The vocal sample we have at the top of the album is much more subtle than the last two albums. It works well. I love the chugging intro anchored by the very 80s synth keyboard work. Good, tight riffing. The vocals in the verse are a mess, honestly. It just never feels coherent. Which might be the point, but it doesn't work for me. Luckily - this is probably their best chorus ever! Or at least their best chorus yet. Simply fantastic, catchy stuff. The second verse is much better, and I love the Maiden riff that follows. Damn that chorus is great...the keyboard transition less so. It's a bit jarring, but thankfully we get some cool chugging riffs with prog tails to follow and another very solid solo. What are the keyboard sound effects in the solo section right before the chorus? Really weird. Very proggy riffing, though. I love the double time drumming on the final chorus, too.

Knowing nothing about the band, I bet this is one old song they still play live. The chorus really pushes this one to a 9/10.

Rulers of the Mind
The keyboard intro here is beyond cheesy, but I'll allow it. It's good fun. The subsequent riffing is once again stellar. Just awesome and heavy, topped off with some neoclassical shred. The biggest issue in Evergrey remains Tom Englund's lyric writing: his first verse is needlessly wordy and comes across as forced. Riff lords provide, however, and deliver absolutely fire between the first two verses and in the pre-chorus. Another great chorus emerges, though a more sorrowful one. The electronic bridge that cuts in after the chorus is very bizarre, but the spoken word bits continue to be more well-layered in the track. I love the piano and lead guitar section in the bridge. It's pure bliss. When the heavier drums kick in and things get a little neoclassical before Carina's alien choir enters I'm fully onboard. Though a bit of a wonky composition, this song builds very nicely to an 8/10.

Watching the Skies
What. The. Fuck. Is. This. Riffing?! The intro of this song is an absolute onslaught of killer riffing while the keyboards keep everything grounded in a weird, gothic way. First verse is still overly wordy, but better. The instrumental bits that follow are nothing less than spectacular. The chorus is nothing special here, sadly. Had they knocked it out of the park this would be a top tier track. The second verse is even more of a mess, but luckily the proggy riff and groove changes keep things interesting. I'm thinking Sven Karllsson is not the best keyboardist for Evergrey as so far I find most of his playing unbefitting for the songs. That said, the piano during the bridge works nicely. Lyrically, this one perplexes me, too. It's the heaviest song yet, but the lyrics feel a bit too "sadboi". I mean, yeah, I get it, dude is being wrecked by aliens every night, but like...IDK. 8/10 but only for the riffing.

State of Paralysis
A nice little interlude/short ballad. It reminds me of Dream Theater a bit, maybe Vacant? It's fine. I wouldn't listen to it outside of the context of the album, but it works for the tracklisting. 7/10

The Encounter

Another song that just rips your face off with riffing right out of the gate! Speaking of Dream Theater, this has to be the proggiest these guys have riffed yet. It's awesome. The vocals work much better here and everything fits together pretty decently. The chorus ties into the previous song, using the same refrain. It's powerful and Tom sounds good. The tonal shifts in the post-chorus chords are really nice. Another great melodic solo, too! The dynamics are great in the final chorus build-up. This is a much more concise song, but I think it works better than anything else so far. It's the most complete song and it's damn good. 10/10

Mark of the Triangle

The mournful, grooving opening is really great. Feels a little Maideny, but then picks up into pure heaviness underpinned with fantastic piano work. I'm coming around on Sven a bit. The verse is great, but still too wordy, Tom! The transition into the chorus is wild, I love it. Chorus is fantastic, as is the second verse. This time around we get a lovely subdued transition into the pre-chorus madness. Really, really cool stuff. The quiet piano bit for the epic solo works really well, too. The band are firing on all cylinders on this song, it's pretty perfect. Tom's vocal histrionics during the quiet bridge are a bit much, but, ya know, dude's getting poked by aliens all night so who wouldn't be a bit dramatic? This song is great. 10/10

Dark Waters

Moodiness returns with a spooky piano and some odd double-layered vocals. The ESL lyrics are really hard to get through on this one. Check out this couplet:

Branches passes me I see treetops beneath me
A floor in grey below me slowly shuts like an iris

Shockingly, I'm not a fan of the choir chant section here. It feels disjointed and doesn't seem to fit the song. Similarly, the section that comes after sounds like Tom is fighting with the piano for attention. The song truly just keeps going downhill. Here's another winning lyric snippet:

She stares at me
At least I perceive her as a she
And she speaks to me I can hear her
Her lips doesn't move
Why can't I be left alone to live my life in harmony
The visitors by night makes this a living nightmare

...I just can't, folks. There's a decent instrumental part in there before the second chorus that's cool. The actual solo doesn't have a rhythm guitar behind it for some reason? Eventually it becomes a harmony, but it still sounds very empty. I would go so far as to say this is a bad song. 4/10

Different Worlds

A quiet, sorrowful intro leads us to Tom being soulful again. The melodies work pretty well here, but once again the lyrics are just not good. Tom's conviction is so strong that it just makes me wish his lyrics were equally powerful. The chorus, in particular, is just worded in such a strange fashion that I stop to think about the grammar instead of enjoying it. Musically, I do like the subtlety of this song. The piano is tasteful throughout, the vocal sample is particularly effective (and even a bit scary), and the solo is wonderful. Better than Dark Waters, but still probably the second weakest track. 6/10

Misled

Really cool, moody intro paired with a heavy groove. The songs are starting to blur together at this point as they repeat this same similar quiet piano dynamic. Nice Carina backing "ahh-ahh's" in the pre-chorus and a killer pre-chorus riff. The chorus is fine, but the riffing underneath the second verse is waaaaaay better. I wish the double-timing on the drums stuck around longer because it's quite distinctive and fun. We're back to the land of killer bridges! Swirling keyboards and chunky rhythmic shifts lead into another nice, emotional guitar solo. This may be one of their most epic bridges! The way they come back to the chorus with a virtually inaudible telephone voice is kinda cool, but also kinda kills the vibe. Eh, it's still great. Sure, why not, 10/10.

Overall, I enjoy this album a lot more than I remember! It's the best so far and things are looking up for the band as a whole. I still really, really want Tom to learn how to write better lyrics and melodies, though.
