Yeah, Europe now has to get down on its knees and atone for all the sins of its forefathers.

If anyone is biting Europe in the ass these days, it's the shortsightedness of its own politicians. For example, pouring money and technology into China's economy, shutting down its own nuclear power plants, and doing "business as usual" with dictators, just to name a few.

Honestly, sometimes the collective West seems to me a little bit like that delusional “energy field master” on the right in the video below.

It's not punishment, it's consequence. A blend of historical continuity, policies and geopolitics in a capitalistic environment. But still, if the laws in EU were protecting and prioritising its people, as other countries do, there would not be such mass migrations. But EU needs cheap labor and it needs a pool of people to give births to the next generation of EU citizens therefore people mass migrate to EU but not UAE or China. It's easy to do it in EU because EU made it easy for them by design.

True, this seems a more realistic appraisal, but European countries that never had a colonial history in Africa or the Middle East are bearing the brunt all the same. So the portrayal of migration as 'just desserts' is very non-sensical to me, and seems to come from a place of resentment.

Yes, because as those non-colonial European countries align themselves with the bigger project (EU) which is steered and pretty much defined by ex-colonial powers they are facing the consequences.

The worst is that for some major decisions i.e., entering Eurozone, there was no referendum in many if not most of the countries.
Though there was at least one case when the government did exactly the opposite of what referendum was dictating, i.e., the referendum in Greece in 2015 where the people voted no to EU imposed measures despite the huge brainwashing attempt by the media & status quo. Following that referendum the government true to its word didn't follow what troika (EU-IMF-ECB ) was asking: The final measures were even worse than before the referendum, as the EU-IMF-ECB seized the opportunity to punish Greek people for voting no.

there have been rumours circulating that Spain is paying the price for it's stance regarding the Israel - Gaza conflict and the genocide. I have not fact checked, researched or confirmed any of them and they are just that, RUMOURS.
But I don't have it beneath them to be behind the crisis.
