Empire's 100 Greater Movie Characters

____no5

Free Man
An interesting on-line poll. I'm happy to see The Dude, Jack Sparrow & Ellen Ripley so high, but Darth Vader & Han Solo rankings are kind of exaggerating.
Tony Montana & Rick Blaine should have made the Top 10, while Vito Corleone as played by Brando, should definitely top the list.
I'm working on my own Top 10, not that easy... What's your thoughts about the list??

Thanks mate!

Well, I would call this a "100 Greater Movie Charachters of the last 35 years" or so, simply because this is the period where most characters come from. Just a couple of older ones.

E.g. I miss Sherlock Holmes who was portrayed well, more than once and many other older fantastic roles.

From this list, I like the characters from LOTR, Star Wars & Indiana Jones the most.

Gandalf and Yoda would lead my list (from this selection). :)

Yes, exactly. I guess it's the internet generation that speaks here.
Like Maradona is bigger than Pele in internet polls, while Pele bigger in classic journalists' ones...
Now you mentioned it, Hercules Poirot is also missing from the list.

I don't see why. These characters have nothing special really, in the way that Marlon Brando's Vito Corleone or Humfrey Bogart's Rick have.
I'd named them iconic characters but certainly not that great. Enough to be in the Top 100, but for Top 10??
I want something more deep for the Top 10, based in the power of performance as well.

Where is Bluto Blutarsy?????!!!

I'm okay with nos. 1 and 2, but the omission of Bluto (John Belushi's character in Animal House) and the elevation of Heath Ledger's overrated Joker in the VERY overrated Dark Knight to no. 3 seriously hurt the credibility of this list.  But, I love lists!

I am not worthy!  :D

The photo rules doesn't it? Well, I think it indeed fits better in the other topic. I'll move it.

What the hell is Boba Fett doing on there? I'm a HUGE Star Wars fan, but I have NEVER understood people's obsession with what amounts to a MINOR character in the original Trilogy. He has like two lines, stands around looking cool and THAT's IT... great character my ass.

Two reasons: The Star Wars Holiday Special which introduced him as a character and remains the only segment of the programme which is deemed watchable, and the fact that he was a major focus in a number of early extended universe releases. That obsession is deeply rooted in Star Wars lore, so many people may not even remember where it originated from (similar to our Adrian Smith thing, I would assume).

Which doesn't mean I approve of him being on that list, but that's a different story.

What??
C'mon man, thing about the masterpieces and major characters that didn't even make it in the list!! Lawrence of Arabia, Walter Matthau's Pirate, Superman & how many more...
Dude did just fine! He's ranked higher from Vito Corleone, for f**k's sake!

Again... what is he doing on that list? these are great characters from MOVIES... not from extended universe "lore" predating the films... ARRRRGGGHHH. Not to mention Lucas regrets that said holiday special and has dedicated his life to destroying any living copy of it... much like the rest of his movies :p
