Dream Theater

OOH OOH OOOOH

OOH OOH OOOOOOOOOOH

OOH OOH OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH

(amazing guitar solo)

I've been listening to the new DT album, and I gotta say, it's their best album in a long time, probably 6DOIT.  It's a lot less pointlessly metal, it's got some amazing JP guitar work, James sounds good again.  However, there are some jarring transitions, Portnoy rapping/attempting death metal vocals again (sigh) and some of the worst lyrics I've ever heard, worse than SC's lyrics.  It's still a solid 4/5 for me, though.

Also, The Count of Tuscany, while being the most cheesy song that's attempting to be serious in all of metal, is some of the best work Dream Theater have ever done.

Wow, I didn't even know they had one coming out-- looks like I hafta wait til June 23 to get it.

At least 2 songs have already leaked, Wasted. I looked at one of them on YouTube yesterday. Didn't quite amaze me, but it was damn good.

But I'm going to try to avoid further leaks. I'm waiting for June 23, buy the CD and listen to it all day. I'll be on vacation from work then, so I have cleared my schedule and listening to the new DT is the entirety of my vacation plans (so far).

Cool, thanks for the 'heads-up'!

I was reading on their site just a few moments ago, and it looks as if they will be releasing a song a week for digital purchase.

I'm looking forward to it, though; I'll probably do like you, and just wait to hear it as a whole-- their stuff always seams to listen better as a complete album (I rarely shuffle DT stuff; I'll just listen to an album from start to finish).

The songs they are releasing in advance of the album are cover versions, not new DT songs. There will be a 2-CD version of the new album with those covers on the 2nd CD. One of the covers is known to be the "To Tame A Land" cover from Maiden Heaven (the others are unknown). Could be interesting, since DT sometimes does good covers.

That sounds extra cool- thanks for the tip (guess I didn't read closely enough).  I was just going to get the standard CD, but I'll be checking out the 2-CD version now.

Update - I forgot something important...

The 2nd CD of the 2-CD version will also have instrumental mixes of the entire DT album. That means all vocals and solos removed - just the rhythm and riffs. Intended for bedroom guitarists to jam along with.

I like DT (only got an album and the EP).

Listening Change of Seasons (1995), i must admit i like LaBrie's voice.

Listening to the Number of the Beast live (2005), i must admit i can't stand LaBrie's voice.

Maybe i should buy another studio album.  :S

But i must say i was impressed by their talent back when i bought Images and Words and the refered Change of Seasons.

I am one of the few people around here that likes his voice.  However, and I don't recall which album this happened prior to, he had ruptured his vocal chords during a bout of serious food poisoning, and many feel that he has never fully recovered from that.

I didn't know that. In my opinion, it's sad, because i was overwhelmed after listening to Change of Seasons for the very first time.

I mean, aside the great musicianship and lyrics, DT had a great vocalist, really.
But on the NOTB, he just killed me. I couldn't stand his shouting.

Well, he's no Bruce Dickinson ;)

I am also the only person I personally know that likes his voice. Everybody else just keep ranting on and on about how he is too soft and not suited for metal and boring and yada yada yada. I think he's great and the best voice Dream Theater could ask for.

Okay, now for the big update from the concert!
2 days ago I was in the 2nd row at the first Dream Theater show in Israel! It was so overwhelming! The crowd simply went mental, and I was in the front, so I felt it all around me :P

The energies were unprecedented, I tell you. I think the band themselves were overwhelmed from the crowd reaction too - both LaBrie and Portnoy said that they couldn't expect a better welcoming and that the crowd here made the show "simply awesome" :D This show is the first DT show here, and one of the first major non-Israeli artists/bands coming here in a long long time. So the energies and atmosphere was really something! :)

They also offered on sale original tour t-shirts and me and my friends all got one  ::)
They said on the radio that 12,000 people attended the show - This is outstanding considering that it's a progressive metal band, and metal in Israel is so unpopular it's scary.

Anyway, the show was really great, I simply felt like the entire show was one giant group orgasm.

I'd like to share a song from the show with you, which I think was the pinnacle of the show - It was so emotional, I felt like I was going to explode.  B)

Listen to the new album when it comes back this week. From the leak, the new cover songs that have been released and recent concerts, a consensus is forming over at Dream Theater Forums: James LaBrie is back. It took 14 years, but his voice has finally fully recovered. It has noticeably improved since the last DT album and tour.

In particular, look for Dream Theater's cover of the Rainbow song "Stargazer", which was released about 6 weeks ago. LaBrie is awesome on that song. He shows Dio how it's done. Yes, you read that right.

The album is out Tuesday. The covers are already available on iTunes...

Rainbow, "Stargazer"
Queen, "Tenement Funster / Flick Of The Wrist / Lily Of The Valley" - Brian May reportedly likes this one
Dixie Dregs, "Odyssey"
Zebra, "Get Your Fingers Out Of My Hair"
<I don't know what the 5th one is yet, but it's out...>
Iron Maiden, "To Tame A Land" - already available on Maiden Heaven, will hit iTunes this coming Tuesday.

Wow, that's a great list of covers. As a big Rainbow fan, I sure will enjoy Stargazer! It's good to see that they covered the entire "Tenement Funster / Flick Of The Wrist / Lily Of The Valley" medley, because on the Queen album they're inter-connected.
