I appreciate the concern, but is it a spoiler if the whole band has actively confirmed the setlist in many media outlets?
Yea, I don't think we need to worry about spoilers for this tour as far as the set list goes, it is being very clearly advertised.

On the 3rd disc from the special edition BCASL what are everyone's thoughts on DT covers of Stargazer, Take Your Fingers From My Hair, and (of course) To Tame A Land?

The Queen and Zebra covers are awesome. Everything else is pretty cool too, was neat that they chose TTAL. Only real gripe I have with thr disc is JPs shredding over Stargazer.

I think Jordan's keyboards add a cool Eastern-sounding vibe to TTAL, but the song as a whole sounds quite soulless when compared to the original. I do like the interlude at 4:06 better in the Dream Theater version, though; it's more chaotic. Musically, I think Stargazer is a stronger cover, although aside from the guitar solo I don't hear many differences from the original. LaBrie is decent on both songs, but he lacks the passion of Bruce and the... everything... of Dio.

As usual - I love the original songs and I love DT even more, but I don't like the combination. I mean, the songs are good and all, enjoyable in a way and their choice in picking what to cover is quite good and interesting (whether it's TTAL or Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding), but - just as with the Official Bootlegs NOTB, Master of Puppets, DSOTM... - it's much more fun talking about what they've covered than to actually listen to it.

I must say I felt little disappointed listening the new album at first, without booklet and all, but when you enter the story and lokkinh at this like on dramatic play it's beautiful

Amazing
1) Images and Words
2) Scenes From a Memory

Great
3) When Dream and Day Unite
4) Awake
5) Dream Theater
6) Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance
7) Astonishing

Very Good
8) A Dramatic Turn on Events
9) Black Clouds and Silver Linings
10) Train of Thoughts

Meh
11) Octavarium
12) Falling Into Infinity
13) Systematic Chaos

For me it's currently

"Astonishing"

1.) A Dramatic Turn of Events (yes, it's probably surpassing even SC at the moment. The fact that it's arguably their most "wanking" album might have something to do with that... :innocent: )
2.) Systematic Chaos
3. & 4.) Octavarium & Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (absolutely equal)

Excellent
5.) Black Clouds and Silver Linings
6.) Train of Thought
7.) Falling into Infinity
8.) Scenes from a Memory

Very good
9.) Images & Words
10.) The Astonishing
11.) Awake

"Just" good
12.) Dream Theater
13.) When Dream and Day Unite

Why does everyone hate this??? Along with 6 Degrees my favorite DT album.

Now that some time has passed since The Astonishing was released, I want to say that people who only listen to DT for their heavy material are missing out on the gem that is The Astonishing. I totally understand the album is not for everyone but I think it's something completely unique in DT's discography. I listen to the songs almost every day to experience something different from the other albums, and I enjoy it a hell of a lot. That said, The Astonishing's drawback is its length, it is not very good to listen to in its entirety. This is because the songs are soft and don't have a ton of variety in terms of style, just like ToT is heavy all the way. Listen to the songs individually and you've got plenty of top notch ballades.

I'm the opposite, I can only listen to The Astonishing in one sitting, I haven't gotten much mileage out of the individual songs. But aside from that I agree. This album was definitely an answer to those claiming DT has gotten formulaic. I enjoy it, don't love it, but it will probably be one that doesn't get many plays from me just because of how dense it is and how you have to be in exactly the right mood to enjoy.

I haven't listened to the album in about a month and I'm seriously considering not listening to it again until the concert in May.

My feelings regarding The Astonishing are a real rollercoaster - after being rather excited after the release, my appreciation soon dropped very low, thinking this was more of an album to possess than to actually listen to all that much and being disappointed they've strayed too far from what I like about the band (also - too many ballads!!! ) and the story not being all that great/clever/original in the end

...

only to bring it to my car this weekend and playing the sh*t out of Act 1 on repeat and enjoying it very much, thinking how great it actually is and loving pretty much every track.

I wonder what the next development's going to be. :D

However, liking it or not at the precise moment in time, I keep thinking it was a great "f*ck you" to all those naysayers complaining about how they've gone stale etc.

Same as Mosh. I can't really get away with picking out individual tracks, I have to listen to The Astonishing in full if at all. I'm still not fond of the most warm and sentimental ballads on the album, that all gets a bit too much.
