I emailed Derek congratulating him on his art and asking him various questions and i was suprised to get a reply! Not a lot of people that are well known usually reply to emails so i was very happy!

thanks for all the kind words.
I do not have any originals in my possession. Maiden have all the originals
but I do not think they will be likely to part with them.
sometimes a piece of maiden art comes up for sale on ebay. I do not know if
they are real originals or not. if they are then they are probably stollen
property. some of the artwork went "missing" from the printers in the early
days.
if you keep your eyes open you might get lucky

Yes, he apparently always reply emails, personally.
He answered my 2 emails, promptly, some years ago.
Really a nice guy.
He told me the procedure of how he created the SIT cover and details surrounding the drawing/painting.
 
Do you still have those e-mails? I'm interested on how he even came up with the SIT cover...
 
ill ask him in the next one i send Onhell, he is a very nice guy, i just recieved another which i thought was a bit erm....

I stopped working with maiden because as they got rich and famous their egos
got the better of them and they became real assholes to work for.

Do you really think HE really wrote that???
 
At a point in a career when you have so much success, ego is always luring. I think the Maiden guys might well have gone through that and their relationship with some people -Derek not being the most normal of the bunch, to say the least- might have suffered.

It was a period. Now, I doubt they're still in that ego trip. They've aged like good wine, one can obviously hope.

Because without Maiden - I'm sure - not that much people would know him....
They made him as well known as he is right now...

I doubt it, but I'll have a look when I get home.
I might've saved them (the text) as Word-files, on my PC.

He stated that he didn't want to work for Maiden anymore. Schedule were being tighter and tighter and he was tired of all this.

Now, there could be other reasons. I remember an interview (that I can't find right now) where, if you read between the lines, you'd understand that Maiden paid ok, but not so well...

Anyway, I don't like his latest drawings...

i hope you arent saying i made it up MaidenAustria. I found the email on his website which was linked from here. Im certain it was him that wrote it

Derek is burnt out and now, when somebody wanna tell him the truth : "Man..your latest artworks are shit" Riggs anwers : You have too big ego...
Just look, he copied his own cover almost 3 times (I'm talking about Futureal alternative artwork and latest Gamma Ray and Stratovarous covers).

He stopped working for them because they became difficult to work with. I'm sure Maiden have their own opinions of Riggs too.
Bruce had Riggs do artwork for Scream for Me Brazil but Bruce said something must have gotten lost in the translation because it looked like some puppet with an ice pick. Riggsy is a great artist but for me his artwork has never been as good since he started using CG instead of a paintbrush

From Dereks website. He used to have a load of wickerman concept stuff on there too that was mint but hes taken it down. Probably have them on my pc.... somewhere
