Classic Rock Mega-Knockout: Results

As Foro and I discussed briefly in the poll thread, Under My Thumb is an underrated gem. We also had plenty of Good Vibrations (RIP) talk in that thread.

My Sharona is a funny song. It's great fun to play in a band, especially as bassist. That riff is pure fun to jam. But sadly, no one besides the band really wants to hear it anymore... :S

In Keith Richard's autobiography, he talked about how he and Mick and Brian Jones would spend hours jamming under the supervision of Ian Stewart, learning how to "weave". I think Wild Horses is one of their best weaves.

Steely Dan, generally speaking, is a musician's band. They certainly play and write well. Problem is they never quite "rock". They're like a beautiful art-house film when all you wanna watch is stuff blowing up.

Joe Walsh defeats the band he will later join. I don't like Take It Easy much as a song, but that is a well-produced record for such a simple song.

I like Spoonman, but I wish "Outshined" had made the list. Not only is it better, but we'd have had 7/4 vs. 7/4.

Born In The USA was a huge favorite of mine when it came out. Nearly wore out that cassette.

The Joker: can't understand why anyone ever liked this turd. Good riddance.

Landslide: this one at least I get why someone would like it. Very pretty. But I hate Stevie Nick's voice. Too raspy.

Pour Some Sugar, Jet Airliner: both songs that seem so very simple, yet can't be covered. I've tried in various bands and it always sounds bad. You really need the specific sound of those bands to make those songs work.

Hurts So Good was the first John Cougar song I ever heard. I remember being struck by the power of the performance even though it's not a "hard rock" song. I also was probably too young at age 11 to have phrased it that way. That's the intelligent version of "whoa cool song dude".

For Those About To Rock: wasn't a huge fan when it came out. Has grown on me much over the years.

Stranglehold: a personal favorite from covering it. Fun bass riff, great to sing if you can hit the high notes.

Movin' Out: ugh. Buh-bye.

And now I'll try to keep up with the results as I post them...

I started looking at figures for record sales and chart positions. I came up with a unit of measurement to compare bands. I defined the Beatles' level of success in 1964 to be one Beatles, and measured the success of other bands in milliBeatles (mB ). Here's Iron Maiden vs the 10 top-selling artists of all time:

Top10IM.png

The formula for mB (tldr version) is 40% album sales, 40% singles chart peaks and 20% album chart peaks.

Bye Bye Love: good enough that it deserved better than a shutout. I think we can attribute this beating to the quality of the opposition, not the fault of the Cars. (Unless it's their fault for being less awesome than Rush, but many bands commit that error.)

Shattered: this is probably my least favorite Stones song. Don't let the door hit you etc.

Hells Bells: used to have this as my ringtone. Still reach for the phone when I hear it. Shame to see it go, I think it's by far the better song.

Good Times Roll: there's something creepy about Ric Ocasek. The music is good but he looks weird.

Angie: makes me wonder who gets to pick which songs become hits, because this song isn't very good. (Still better than Shattered.)

I have a weakness for that Petty song. It's nowhere near as good as most of his singles, though. Doesn't have that Byrds-twang.

Spirit In The Sky isn't a song, it's just a fuzz-tone demo. I'm not buying.

For What It's Worth: in the right mood, this song is golden. Just the right kind of mellow.

Edit: there's a mistake in the bracket above. Jumpin' Jack Flash won with 11 votes, not 1.

Shame about the Doors tune. That's one of the few guitar-driven Doors songs, after all.

Even bigger shame about SRV. I suspect this forum is lacking blues fans, though.

That's a rock and roll band? Boston needed years of tweaking in the studio for every album, and still only came up with a good one only once.

Lightning Crashes is a great song. Everyone who voted against it should go suck an egg. (Including me!)

All the top seeds won again, and it's the first time I've had to use the "top position wins a tie" rule.

Misty Mountain Hop probably had a bad draw, and could have won against many of the weaker songs. It's a bit simple and a bit silly, so not a top Zep song, but it's also catchy. Something like Achilles or Rain Song (neither is in the 512) may be "better" but you don't walk away humming the melody.

Not much I can say about the Police song that's not obvious: gorgeous pop gem? You know that. I'm sad it lost, even if I can't complain about the winner.

Peter Frampton is a cautionary tale for all musicians. He actually wasn't bad, even when his live album got too big for its own good. But then he started hanging with the Bee Gees. Did the Sgt. Pepper movie and all that. Has been a joke since: Take-home message: just say no to disco.

Def Lep can't catch a break on this forum, whether the drummer has one arm or two. If only Vivian Campbell had been in Def Lep for Foolin'...

I think Dylan writes great songs and I respect him as an artist.
As a performer, (shrug)

I've become a fan of Dylan as a performer over the years, to the point where I virtually always prefer his originals to more accessible covers. I think his main strength lies in his unique phrasing - he's one of the rare singers who knows how to make a melodically repetitive song interesting by varying intonations.

Well, much as I love "Tangled Up in Blue", at least it lost to Jimi Hendrix and not Bad Company or something.

I love the way this one turned out... next round is Kinks vs Kinks and VH vs VH, with a possible You Really Got Me vs You Really Got Me match upcoming.

All the top seeds win... I'm still amazed I voted for Fleetwood Mac not once but twice. I probably need some medicine. :innocent:

I'm slightly surprised at the Fleetwood Mac victory, but even more surprised at the margin of victory there. I figured the Cars song would put up more of a fight.

Shame about both Unchained and Crazy Little Thing, they're both excellent songs. They got a tough draw.

We're now one-quarter done with the first stage. 64 songs have been eliminated, 448 still remain.
