Campaign 1: Metal Battalion, Battle 2 - Lothlöryen vs HammerFall

Lothlöryen. These guys named themselves after something from Lord of the Rings, play power metal with lyrical themes based on Tolkien, have album covers showing fantasy ruins at night, Blind Guardian-esque power chords (and let's not get started on the band logo) and guitar harmonies nicked straight off some Italian symphonic power band. But, they use an umlaut in their band name!

HammerFall. Call me crazy, but I think the message this song wants to get across relates to some sort of cardiac condition. Maybe if I ever manage to memorise the lyrics, I'll get the gist of it.

The first band does the peripherals great. I mean, that logo, that album cover, that ümlaüt. But the music was actually pretty alright, and merely average. It's like they're just made their first brick of cheese.

HammerFall, by comparison, they love it. They clearly are well-versed in brie, and they're eating it by the wagonwheel.

All of this. Plus, HammerFall will pretty much win any contest in which they take part as long as Hearts on Fire is playing.

There's a lot of cheese-tential in Lothlöryen and I must admit I quite enjoyed their song, although I felt their singer was rather underperforming. A band with an epic name and an ambition to match Tolkien's certainly deserves a singer whose screams can melt your earwax.

And then there's HammerFall...
