There's no oil in the Nares Strait. This is about the potential benefits of controlling future shipping lanes.

And as far as territorial claims go, if 'Denmark' did win, it would have to be incorporated into the autonomous territory of Greenland, which has the status within Denmark similar to that held by Canada in the British Empire in the 1800's. In other words, the benefits would be Greenland's, not Denmark's.
Norway claimed most of the North Sea's oil? I would guess that's because most of the North Sea oil reserves are in Norwegian territorial waters.

Japanese ships sit just outside the line of international waters and Mexican waters constantly crossing it, "stealing" our fish and sailing out into international waters before our crappy coast guard or navy or whoever sails out there to catch them. Yet since their ships are WAY better than ours that doesn't happen.

The people of Hans Island are a hardy, resilient folk, always willing to make the best of a difficult situation.

And they have no shortage of difficulties. Their population, while currently stable, is not currently sustainable, as there are only two of them, both men.

"We can see this leading to problems," said Hans, one of the inhabitants. "Currently, the lack of other people just leads to boredom and irritability. But we recognise that, with only the two of us here, our race is doomed to die out."

Hans, the other resident, looked sadly at his feet as Hans spoke.

"I get so lonely," he said.

could be, but this certainly is a joke:

the best way for the people of Hans Island to protect their sovereignty is to increase their population. If you (or someone you know) are female, please consider moving to Hans Island to breed with the Hanses. They will be very appreciative. It is recommended that you dress warmly and bring large amounts of food and a small building with a woodstove if possible.

Of course it's a joke. Just a glimpse on the picture of the island will tell you that nobody lives there.

We have a winner!

Here's a simple solution: Greenland joins Canada as our 4th territory. The Inuit (natives of the north) traditionally lived in both places, and we have tons of ex-Vikings for the Greenlanders of Danish descent.

Expatriot declares home in Canada part of Denmar

NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. (CP) - Carl Hansen's home may have a Niagara Falls address, but he has declared his Drummond Road property a sovereign piece of Denmark.

The expatriate Dane has been a Canadian citizen since 1973, after arriving in Canada in 1958 with $75 in his pocket, a double-barrelled shotgun and two suitcases.

But he says he's ready to renounce his citizenship, "sell everything and move back to Denmark" over the jurisdiction of tiny Hans Island - a barren rock formation in the Arctic Ocean near the North Pole.

"Then I'll put on a uniform and fight for what's right," said Hansen, who retired to Niagara Falls, Ont., 15 years ago.

Hansen wants Canada to give up its claim to the island and recognize it as part of Greenland, which is governed by Denmark.

At 68, Hansen's pledge to take up arms is tongue-in-cheek. He doubts the small Danish army would have him.

"But I do take sides," he said. "And I would be very disappointed in Canada if they don't do what's right."

While the jutting atoll doesn't have the same appeal to most Canadians as, say, the tropical Turks and Caicos, it does have significant importance, Hansen said.

"This particular item is serious because there is no border up there," he said. "This is about fishing rights."

"But the island (was) explored by Danes long before Canada became a country," he said. "It's even named for a Danish explorer - that's why it's called Hans Island."

As part of his one-man protest, Hansen has taken down the Maple Leaf that has fluttered high over his backyard garden and replaced it with another red-and-white one - the Dannebrog of Denmark.

"I never fly the Danish flag, except on a special occasion," Hansen said. "But today it's the Danish flag because we are on Danish ground."


A few problems with his tounge-in-cheek declaration of independance here, though. Under Canadian law, this constitutes an act of "insurrection or apprehended insurrection", which is grounds for institution of the Emergencies Act. This gives Ottawa the legal authority in a time of crisis to shoot the bastard for treason.

Any immigrant with the audacity to disrespect his adopted country like this should be immediately deported, I say. Disagreement is fine, but this slap-in-the-face kind of thing isn't going to help resolve the little diplomatic spat. He's in an excellent position to BUILD bridges, and shouldn't be burning them instead.
