Blazes performance on Doctor Doctor

Does anyone else think Blaze sounds a much better singer and a much better fit with the band on their Doctor Doctor cover than anything else he did with them?

I still like his other stuff with them, but I've always found he sounded bloody great on Doctor Doctor. Is it that his voice at the time simply fit that more hard rock style a bit better?

Or perhaps it's because the song was in the key of (not the tuning of) D whereas damn near every song on The X Factor was in E.

Completely different tangent, I wonder if rather than tuning down, if they could have transposed some of songs down the neck for Blaze. Would be a hassle but they did it with Lord of the Flies for Bruce.

I know for sure you could easily change the 7-3-5 sound on The Trooper for a 5-1-3 on bass, but not sure how many open strings the guitars would need. Maiden baselines often aren't often using open E anyway.

Blaze in general is better suited for gritty and dirty heavy metal, like the kind he does on his solo career. He was more of a No Prayer/FOTD kinda singer than a Powerslave/Seventh Son one.

Now I wonder how British Lion would sound with Blaze.

I don't think it's because of the key. It's because Blaze's voice is right for a rock and metal band. Like British Lion.
If Maiden had helped him with tuning down, he would have done some Maiden songs better, although I think he's a better singer overall now. At the same time, he's great on The Edge Of Darkness for example.

I like the cover more than the original.

Yeah, I think Blaze greatly benefitted from it being tuned down (or in this case, being in a lower key), as he always has done since. It's a great cover that manages to exceed the original, which is a bit of a rare feat.

Maiden's is better because it's based on the UFO version from Strangers in the Night, which is superior to Maiden's version.

Tush was the fourth one, right? We heard the acoustic jam thing in the documentary but I'm pretty sure they did record a proper electric version too since it was a part of the sessions and there were four b-side material songs in total on the progress tracker board. I really wish they'd put 'em all out though. Even just upload them on YouTube between tours as forgotten studio material or something.

One of the best covers they've done, honestly. That said, I'm not really a fan of a lot of bands they've covered, so I'd never be the guy wishing for a covers album from Maiden. But it suited Blaze's voice really well, along with My Generation.
