Posting nothing but a quote from someone else qualifies as non-substantial content. Please find something of your own to add next time, vala.

I tend to forget that you guys have that rule here. Force of habit from the other forums I frequent. Anyway, yeah I'll keep that in mind.

Phantom Of The Opera. Bruce introduced it like that several times on the Early Days tour.

Actually, from what I recall, his usual was closer to "if you don't like this song, you don't like Iron Maiden". But it would indeed be Brucy to add some gratuitous "fuck you"s in there.

At Ullevi (the show that was broadcast in the Nordic countries) he introduced it with ".. and if you don't like heavy metal, I advise you to go away before you have a heart attack and die!"  :D

ep·ic
   /ˈɛpɪk/ Show Spelled[ep-ik]
–adjective Also, ep·i·cal.
1.
noting or pertaining to a long poetic composition, usually centered upon a hero, in which a series of great achievements or events is narrated in elevated style: Homer's Iliad is an epic poem.
2.
resembling or suggesting such poetry: an epic novel on the founding of the country.
3.
heroic; majestic; impressively great: the epic events of the war.
4.
of unusually great size or extent: a crime wave of epic proportions.

So, ROTM, Paschendale... anything long, with a 'hero' (some sort of protagonist).

So, the question is:  Is Hallowed epic?  I'm curious to what people think.  Now, this isn't a denial of its greatness, just whether or not it is epic.

you are just using that fist definition. Hallowed is pure poetry and is by definition an epic. Using only the first definition I could easily list Charlotte The Harlott as my fav epic

"Hallowed be the name" is the best metal song ever . Some people might get tired of it (the same way that some people are tired of "Iron Man" for example) but seriously it is a landmark in heavy metal , IMO.

Rime of the Ancient Mariner. But I also love Alexander the Great & Seventh Son, I'd say they both classify as epics aswell.

Define what epic is, and then I will go ahead and tell you.

Epic is a song:
1. Usually clocking at around 7 minutes or longer.
2. With much: tempo changes, rhythm passages, etc.
3. Tells some kind of story, there is a main character, a hero.

In this case, Maiden epics are:

Phantom Of The Opera
Hallowed Be Thy Name
To Tame A Land
Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
Alexander The Great
Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
Sign Of The Cross
The Clansman
Dream Of Mirrors
Paschendale
The Longest Day
Isle Of Avalon
Starblind
The Talisman
TMWWBK
WTWWB.

Maybe I forgot some...

Here are the best 10 in my own opinion (in chronological order) :

Phantom of The Opera
Hallowed Be They Name
To Tame A Land
Rime of The Ancient Mariner
Alexander The Great
Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
Dance of Death
Paschendale
For The Greater Good of God
When The Wild Wind Blows

If push came to shove, I suppose I'd say SSOASS was my ultimate Maiden epic though.

Ooh, a post with naught but a quote. You just incited a moderator edit!

Please, folks. I know other forums allow just a quote. We prefer discussion. Find something of your own to add.

I don't think you can define an epic really. For instance something like "Children of the Damned" feels more epic to me than "The Thin Line Between Love and Hate" yet TTBLAH fits the "definition" better. Songs are epic when they feel epic.

Edit: HBTN is the best of what I'd define as the epics. Although the most epic of the epics are The Clansman and SSoaSS.

Another interesting one is Afraid to Shoot Strangers, I'd say that could almost be classed as epic.

ill rank the over 7 min songs in order of my favorites:

Hallowed Be Thy Name
Alexander the Great
For the Greater Good of God
Starblind
Benjamin Breeg
Seventh Son
Phantom of the Opera
Sign of the Cross
Paschendale
The Clansman
These Colours Don't Run
When the Wild Wind Blows
Brighter then a Thousand Suns
Lord of Light
The Thin Line
Isle of Avalon
Fear of the Dark
Dream of Mirrors
No More Lies
The Legacy
Dance of Death
Rime of the Ancient Mariner
To Tame a Land
The Longest Day
Journeyman
The Nomad
The Talisman
The Man Who Would Be King
The Unbeliever

I probably forgot some.

Edit: Added in Fear of the Dark, Dance of Death, Journeyman, These Colours Don't Run, Brighter than a Thousand Suns, and Lord of Light
Edit 2: Benjamin Breeg and No More Lies. Fuck Maiden has a lot of epics.
