It's not that he wasn't good, he is really great, both as a riff-man and as a soloist (that solo you picked is actually one of my favourites), it's just that the others are a completely different class. Bar Hetfield who 1.) is actually a killer thrash rhythm guitarist, 2.) is the sole reason to listen to Metallica, actually, so he gets a pass.

I honestly don't know how to assess Townshend as a guitarist, so I refrain from either commenting or voting as far as he's concerned.

Just listened to Judas Priest over a veeery long while and stumbled on something that immediately reminded me why Tipton used to be my favourite guitarist. Short but very tasty solo at 2:20-2:36.
