BEST BAND EVER: Results!

The intricacies of memory! DUH!

Personally, when I vote, I only rely on my memory of these guitar players (whether I've actually heard them or just think I've heard them).

Wow these matchups are intense.

Sorry if you’ve answered this already NP but are these randomized? Some of these pairings are perfect but some are also a bit ridiculous. So it’s hard to tell :p I think that’s good though.

Petrucci vs Romeo is perfect but brutal. My appreciation for Romeo as a guitarist has increased recently. He’s definitely technically superior to Petrucci. In some ways he is a Yngwie clone but he is a much better writer and I find his soloing to be more creative (although he recycles riffs and licks a ton). His biggest weakness is tone. Easily the worst tone in this round and that’s saying a lot when KK is here.
I ended up going with Petrucci because I just prefer his tone and playing style. In some ways it’s neoclassical style vs a jazzier/straight metal style although both guitarists are able to crossover. I think Petrucci is just slightly more versatile.

Buckethead is done but I voted for him anyway.

Romeo, Blackmore, Buckethead and Iommi. Only Gilbert/Blackmore was a somewhat tougher choice, but not by very much, really.

Same as in the last round:
Btw. matches in this round were drawn like this: #1 vs #32, #2 vs #31, #3 vs #30, and the rankings were determined based on the average votes in the game so far.

That first matchup is brutal. I love Romeo, but Petrucci has to take it.

Petrucci is definitely more versatile and has far superior tone. I would argue that he is technically superior to Romeo due to his incredible talent and versatility. Romeo is incredible at what he does, but I wouldn't say his technique extends beyond a couple of specific tricks.

Have to agree with Knick here. Petrucci's versatility puts him ahead of Romeo in terms of technique. Take his playing on the verses of Take the Time, the unison on In the Name of God and solo on Lines in the Sand, for example. He covers a lot of ground as a guitarist. He's rhythmically much more interesting. He has those Al Di Meola-isms to his playing that just give him a tastier style than the average shredder.

Romeo's playing has never grabbed me personally but I'm not a huge fan of the neo-classical sound in general.

The game that will follow this one will be the bassists game. I was thinking of posting videos in every round, the same way Perun does in Cheesevivor. I'm not expecting much traffic in this game because good/bad bass playing is harder to notice, at least in metal, so this might be of help.

Who can help me out with that? Since that game will start straight in the knockout phase, I'd need some help in seeding and picking the videos for that round. Like one per bass player. It wouldn't need much work since if you already nominated a bass player, surely you can pick a single song that highlights his playing :p Anyway, @Forostar, @CriedWhenBrucieLeft, @The Flash, or anyone else, would you be up for it?

Btw. here's the list: https://forum.maidenfans.com/threads/best-band-ever-nomination-thread.39881/page-6#post-622756

I probably only nominated Les Claypool; but, yeh, I can suggest the video for him if you want.

EDIT: Wait, I also nominated Jonas Hellborg & Bootsy Collins! And Billy Gould is also there. I suppose I could put forward some videos for those guys...

Sure. I nominated non-metal bassists, it's pretty easy to find things that highlight their playing because they're in the forefront.

EDIT: Wait, I also nominated Jonas Hellborg & Bootsy Collins! And Billy Gould is also there. I suppose I could put forward some videos for those guys...

Thanks for nominating Jonas Hellborg. I forgot about him when I was doing my nominations. Criminally underrated bassist, he wasn't any less of a standout in their project with Shawn Lane.

Moving forward, @Night Prowler - is it possible to list the bands/artists that these people have played for in the poll? Like - Les Claypool (Primus) or Billy Sheehan (Steve Vai/Mr. Big/Sons of Apollo)

It would really help my Google searches if I could just go to a specific band.

Nope. I wanted to do more games but I think that was around the time the forum changed looks and polls changed so I couldn't host games.
