Author Michael Crichton is dead

Yes, this is a tragedy. He was definitely a top ten author for me and a brilliant man.

I am sorry to hear about your mother as well, that is a huge loss and truly tragic, I hope you and your family are holding up OK and dealing with your loss to the best extent possible.

I wouldn't call him a "top ten" author - for me, his writing style was average or perhaps slightly above at best.

However, his ideas and plots were better than his writing, which is why Hollywood plundered so many of his books - and why his books were slightly better than his writing alone could have achieved.

Well yes, as a writer there are much better but subject matter and attention to detail is what puts him in my top 10.

On his website they had an interview with him (years ago) where he admited to being a crappy writer, but SMX said it best, it was his ideas and plots that made his poor writing more than tolerable. :D

I loved Crichton, he is the author that got me reading novels rather than comic books and I read the vast majority of his fictional works. Truly sad news.

Get the fuck out of here!!  This is the first I heard of it. Loved The Andromeda Strain, ER and of course Jurassic  Park.

I've only found out the news whilst browsing this forum. Comes as a great shock to myself, can't believe I hadn't heard about it in the media sooner. I've just glanced up towards my book shelf to see numerous Crichton titles sitting there. As a dinosaur obsessed child I remember reading Jurassic Park, which of course spawned spawned the movie of the same name, probably my favourite film of all time.
