ATG on tour?

Back in 1983...also, do we have multiple boots supporting that statement? I was -1 years old during the World Piece Tour.

Without a stillsuit you would fry
On the sands so hot and dry
In a world called Arrakis.

It is a land that's rich in spice
The sandriders and the "mice"
That they call the "Muad'Dib".

He is the Kwizatz Haderach.
He is born of Caladan
And will take the Gom Jabbar.

I think that's what they meant... especially the last part. : P

Yep.  ;)  God-awful.

So was I. :D But I have a bootleg from maybe the first show on the POM tour, before the album was even released, they played it then.

And take a look here, it was played throughout the tour.

Before playing To Tame A Land he went on talking about how son of a bitch was Mr. Frank Herbert, but not saying that he didn't like the lyrics.

Someone said that Fear Of Dark is ridiculous lyrically; well one would be surprised if they knew that dark, public speech and flying scares people more than death. My sister is a very corageous woman in her 40's, but when there's blackout or she's in the dark for some reason, she turns into a helpless child, immedeately.

... and I'm sure she'd be happy you told us that.

Why would the lyrics be bad? Because one does not like Science Fiction? Fair enough. But the song is about this subject, so in what way could the lyrics have been better then? Remember that the words have to fit the music, so it's not so easy to think of alternative lyrics (both in content and form).

I recall reading that Steve believed it was his favorite song, but I thought that was shortly after the Piece of Mind release,

Yes.

No. He told this in a serious interview (conducted by John Stix), speaking about all the Maiden songs from 1980-1983.

Perhaps a little distance has given him some clear perspective.

The albums which followed Piece of Mind probably contained songs he liked more. After Rime was released it's hard to return to TTAL. Steve's favourite song of the moment is Hallowed, but that probably has to do with the crowd reaction which might be bigger these days compared to the NOTB tour. Also Nicko threatens to leave the band if Maiden would not play this song live anymore. No chance that another ancient epic will return again, especially not when you see this lengthy new material.

Foro, the term "drunk on his own whiskey" means "particularly proud of an accomplishment". It doesn't mean he was literally drunk, just that he just put this album out and was likely very proud of it at the time.

Honestly, I wouldn't want to sing TTAL a lot. I have trouble with it when I am just hanging out, listening to POM or Iron Maiden in general.

Ah thanks! :)

Well I guess this song is indeed difficult to sing and perhaps Bruce has a good reason to not admit that.
Instead it's better for him to make the lyrics ridiculous.  :D ;)

Steve took care of that all by himself!    :P

Look, plenty of people like the song, that's fine.  And, the lyrics do indeed summarize some of the plot points in Dune.  I just think that the lyrics, particularly the three verses quoted above (not a coincidence that Jeffmetal and I had the same verses in mind), come across as VERY silly, which presumably is not at all what they intended.  So be it.  Rime more than makes up for it.

Alright, I'm back after a few days, and this goes back to the OP ... the source for Bruce saying ATG would get played was a show in Athens. He promised it to the Greeks, sang a bit of the chorus. Not a rumor: I saw footage on youtube. (Saw a bunch of people asking, never saw an answer.)

Nope. Never gonna happen. Bruce makes lots of promises onstage, whatever the crowd wants to hear. You can't take it seriously unless he's making the same promises at all shows.

hockeyguy, you're in Denver, right? I think you said you were at the 2005 show at Fiddlers (Early Days tour). You might recall Bruce promised Maiden would come back to Denver on the next tour. They didn't: no AMOLAD, no SBIT.

I don't believe anything Bruce says. Great singer, great person, but I need a better source.

I saw the vid and he was humming the first verse and the crowd sang the chorus. I didn't hear him promise anything though.

However, it proves he knows they want to hear it and proves he hasn't forgotten it altogether.

Yeah, that may be right, it's been a long time since I saw the video.

I heard he promised ATG, but maybe that was just posted here with the link to the vid.

So we're dealing with 3 faulty sources of information: internet forums, my memory and Bruce Dickinson. Don't trust any of 'em!
