Ask me.

I did not mean anything demonic. I was thinking more about how song writing changed moving forward, were there songs that did not work as well (or better) with say Adrian versus Dennis ... or for live songs that Prowler (for example) certainly is different sounding with a lineup of Bruce, Nicko, Adrian, Dave, Steve versus Paul, Clive, Dennis, Dave, Steve

Sorry, I realized I did not make my question very clear.

One more if you do not mind (I do not want to be a pest) ... but with Clive's recent passing, is there anything you story you would mind sharing about him?

It is so sad, I never met the man and missed seeing him live by one tour, but I always picture him smiling behind the drum set making some incredible music ... from afar, he seemed like a very nice person and certainly an incredible drummer.

Part 2 of your question is easy, just follow the link that Forostar left you. As for part 1 of your question, well, the dynamics of the songs didn't change at all. Just because a new member joins the band doesn't meant the song had to change. The sound and the guitar solo might sound different, but that's all.

Loopy, about the time Paul Di'Anno was in the band, did you hear anything being talked about The Number of the Beast? Any rehearsal or recording being made?

I think about the time Rod was to sign a contract with EMI, he had plans for 3 albums. So I wonder if (or when) Number of the Beast was first spoken in the band...

Sorry mate and I really wish I had an answer, but the whole Number of the Beast thing happened after I left for the first time. As with most roadies, we were badly informed about a lot of things. For example, I didn't even know the band had signed a recording deal with EMI until a couple of hours after it had happened. As far as Rod was concerned, we ( the crew) were at the bottom of the list of people who mattered. Even though we helped to put the band on the World map, Rod had no time for us at all. As for Rod having plans??? He may be a complete and utter shit when it comes to dealing with people, but he had nothing to do with the bands song writing or how they did Number of the Beast. Steve wouldn't allow that.

Hi Loopy. Many people (myself included) think that Maiden is lead by Steve and Rod. Is it wrong ? Don't they make all the important decisions together ?
I remember reading something from Adrian saying that Rod would always put the pressure on the band members, and that Steve would relieve that. It looked like shared roles and a well organized choregraphy (I hope my point is clear : my English is sometimes insufficient to explain myself). And thanks again.

I think you are absolutely right about the relationship between Rod and Steve, and yes they do make all the big decisions, but it's still Steve's band and he will always have the final word. Back in the days before Jan joined, they used to vote on various issues. Democracy at it's finest, but it did go against me back in 1984, when such a vote got me fired. Now there are 6 of them, it makes you wonder how they deal with problems. As for your English, it's as good as mine.

Loopy, with great interest I just read the latest blog. Love the happenings you're describing, and to me it really enlarges the idea of what went on! I have quite some questions that have to do with the debut album so I grouped them into one post. Hope that's OK.

Recording order / production / track selection
1. Do you remember -anything really, of- the recording order of the tracks? E.g. was it completely different from the track listing? Did Maiden start with Prowler? Remember the last song that was done? I can understand it of course if you don't remember this anymore, but any info on it (however small) I'd find interesting.

2. Another thing about order: Did Dave (left channel) and Dennis (right channel) record their rhythm guitars together at the same time, or did they do all their parts after each other, separately.

If the latter: Who (mostly) started?
And did a guitarist do one song and then the other did his thing in that same song, before they went to the next song?
Or did one guitarist do the whole album, and then the other did the whole album?

3. Do you know/remember who came up with the torture me back at your lair idea, see also: http://forum.maidenfans.com/threads/torture-me-back-at-your-lair.26120/
And the connection of Transylvania and Strange World which flow into each other. Do you know how that idea came about? Did Steve order Will Malone to do that? I can also imagine that this purely was a producer idea, which the band might have liked, although Steve was the "boss".

4. Before Sanctuary was recorded, did the band already know that this would not end up on the album? Or were album related decisions -such as track selection- made after (or during) the time the songs were recorded?

Location of the studio
Since I am really into locations in relation to events of the past, l was planning to ask a question about venues from the early days, and I will do so later. But for now, let's just start with this one location:

5. Do you know if this parking lot (or the same building) in which the studio was built still exist?
And do you think the rooms (area) in which the album was recorded are still there?
Could you give directions on how to find it?

1. I don't remember which order the band recorded the album. Most of the time, we ( the crew) were outside the studio, and were only allowed in if somebody needed something, for example a glass of water, etc.
2. Both guitars were recorded at the same time, except when it came to doing the solo's, but I can't tell you who went first.
3. I think the 'torture' thing was an idea that came from the producer. As for the blend of Transylvania into Strange World, I have no idea. It was a bit of a surprise when I heard it.
4. We had recorded Sanctuary for the Metal for Mutha's album, and Steve didn't like the way it came out, so decided it wasn't good enough for the album.
5. I have googled the possible where abouts of the studio, and have no idea. It was somewhere off of Kingsway, near Holborn. Even back then, Kingsway was a one way street, and we had to approach from the south, so that would make it a turning on the right, but I can't remember which road we turned into. I have not been around that area for so many years I don't even know if it exists any more.
I hope that gives you enough info for now. I'm off for a lay down.

Thank you Loopy!

About Sanctuary. I am aware of the Methal for Mutha's version but later Maiden recorded a different version (I assume during the debut album sessions).

I wish I could help you, but I don't remember the band recording another version. So long ago.
