Alexander The Great some day!

This guy went to Nicko's show and posted a little review. Nicko talked about playing the song.

The question and answer session was fun, it was cool to have him answer my question. I asked him, “Are there any songs in particular, that either haven’t been played live before or haven’t been played in a long time, that you would like to do—“. I was going to say “on a future tour” but he had already given a quick and matter of fact response of “Alexander The Great”. I was pretty shocked and the crowd all started cheering. He then got really excited about the song and about how great he thought it would go over live. He started mouthing all the drum parts and singing the riffs and having fun. He then looked me in the eyes () and explained that they had rehearsed it, although he didn’t say when, but that Adrian couldn’t get the weird solo part down right (from 4:02 to 4:38 in the song I think). He sung the part and asked if I knew which part he meant and I'm pretty sure he meant that. He said that Steve originally told Adrian to play it like that back in the day and that Adrian couldn’t get the timing of it right during rehearsals.

He said that Janick had offered to play that part for him and Nicko got a funny look on his face and the crowd had a good laugh about it. Nick said that Dave just sat back and didn’t say anything when Jan offered to take the part. In the end he said it would be a really cool song to do and he’d like to do in sometime and the crowd definitely agreed. I was really glad that my question had got such a warm response from both him and the crowd.

That's really cool, Nicko has expressed his interest in playing that song a few times before. Hopefully it happens. Out of all the 80's classics never played live, that one is most needed to be done.

That is great, I hope they come to some conclusion.

I think H could pull it off - I don't mind if some bits here and there are different. Even if he improvises the whole time.

In my dreams, when they play that live, after H's and Davey'd solo time they should also give the same amount of time to Janick (he may compose some melodies just for that) and the three amigos effect would be complete!

H is a perfectionist. And it's pretty hard to nail down timing of something that has erratic timing  :D (we've already discussed that)

I don't think Janick would do it badly tbh. Just a shame H is such a stickler for accuracy.... so does this mean the studio track was meant to be different?

No, but there's a difference between studio (when you have tens of takes, and pick up one), and live, when you need to keep it consistent.

To be honest, if they've discussed playing it, rehearsed it, & all that's (really) preventing them from playing it is Adrian... then, well, he ain't the god some here think he is!  :D

Look, a couple of guys online can play it pretty close (shit, I can play it pretty close!); and it's far less (as discussed) about difficult timing & more about idiosyncratic/one-off timing. Janick has a fairly erratic, jumpy, idiosyncratic style generally; and he's quite light-fingered across small acoustic fills --so I think they should let him try. I for one would be happy to hear Janick butcher it (which I don't believe he would) if it meant hearing it live. Mosh has he said stuff like this before? i.e. mentioned them practising it etc.

H can do it, he hath judged that our mortal souls arent ready for what would be unleashed. Therefor he is taking the hit to protect us, if he played it properly then think what would happen... over the speakers 'My son, ask for thyself another kingdom' and how many people would even make it to the solos?   the rest that remained standing or in a non paraletic state would just be liquified by the solo played correctly.

H does not wish this  :innocent:
It would be a brilliant thing to experience if it finally made an appearance though... shame about all the fatalities but the needs of the many outweigh the lives of the few i say

I'm still really curious as to when they rehearsed it. Clearly, with Janick being mentioned, it was this side of 1999/2000. Do you reckon it was in the running for SBiT? Tron: it would be hard not to piss my pants before the music had even started.

If I had to choose between never hearing it live, or hearing it with Janick butchering the solo, I'd choose the second option :)

Unfortunately, I think that happened in 1999. In the following year, when asked "why don't you play Alexander", Bruce responded with, "Adrian forgot the solo". That response might reflect the original album tour rehearsals (1986), however they played 6 out of 8 album songs on that tour, and played Rime, so maybe there just wasn't space in setlist. And we know of Bruce's dissatisfaction with lyrics, and his general mood and attitude in those days. Again, in SBiT, they said prior to tour that there's going to be room for only one big epic, and that was, of course, Rime.

So you suspect, Zare, that the rehearsal & Janick threads of the story (that I muddled together here) are very much seperated in time --& that the Janick offer was just at some later date?

Whoops, good correction about Janick account. Now I'm almost certain that was 1999.

Forostar! That's a hellish suggestion!  :D
FotD?..AtG?..FotD?..yeh, let's go for FotD guys; it's a real crowd pleaser!
--I hope that's not how it went. That FotD has a lot to answer for...

Unless it was the SBIT tour and they crammed in FOTD instead.

I doubt it. I really think FOTD was a given. You and I may disagree with the band's choice, but I honestly think FOTD was there because they felt they shouldn't leave it out. It's almost as much a given as Hallowed Be Thy Name.

(OK, so they left FOTD out on the Early Days tour, but I feel that the Early Days tour was more aimed at the "hardcore fans" than SBIT was)

I doubt that. That sounds like a great convenient excuse. It sounds better than "yeah we tried ATG but it didn't work out, so we came up with FOTD again".

Looking back this also may have been the convenient excuse.
