Album rankings per person

Ancient Mariner
Based on the individual album judgements (explanation here) we now can make an overview of all the studio albums, per person. In this topic I'll put all people who have contributed to at least one album judgement.
People in navy colour have done all albums, and are featured in this post.

To see the results of the members who contributed but who didn't do all songs yet, see my second post of this thread. Scroll down, or click here. I had to split it up, because this message exceeds the maximum allowed length (20000 characters).

Re: The 1980s - album rankings per person

THanks Foro.
I'd just added this the other thread, but I'll move it here.

My Golden Era scores:
SIT            8.3
POM          8.2
PS            8.1
NOTB        7.9
SSOASS    7.8
Killers        7.1
Iron Maiden 6.9

Pretty reflective of what my rankings would have been, I'd say.

Re: The 1980s - album rankings per person

I think I'm through with Seventh Son. 8.6. Looking back, I wish I had given Infinite Dreams a ten, though.

Re: The 1980s - album rankings per person

Your post shows the differences in voting habits between different members pretty well.  For example, Loosey and Black_Thunder are rather conservative voters (avg. album rating 7,5 and 7,7 respectively) while e.g. Travis is very liberal with giving high ratings (avg. album rating 9).

Albums that reached no. 1 the most (tied scores count as half for both, excluded everyone that had just one album rated):
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son: 5.5
Somewhere in Time: 5.5
Powerslave: 3
Piece of Mind: 3
Iron Maiden: 2.5
The Number of the Beast: 1
Killers: 0

Not that surprising, but another way of ranking album preferences of the forum as a whole. :)

Perun, looking back, I also regret some grades (in most cases I wish I'd given a higher one).
I hope we can change this, sooner or later, and all results will be adapted as well.

Don't forget nush, who now and then has a habit of slaying a song with his grade even if his comments are pretty positive.

Sometimes it's not easy to see if someone is conservative. It could be that someone really likes a song or album less than most others. Sometimes we can notice interesting developments. E.g. I've noticed that LooseCannon was a bit negative about POM beforehand, and when you see the final ranking it's not that terrible at all.

I had a huh?-moment myself when I saw that the first album has the same grade as Piece of Mind. The first album is less produced, the lyrics less mature, and some of my favourite musicians Nicko, Adrian and Bruce are not playing on it. The Trooper is not on it, a song which I've seen and enjoyed many times.

But when I think longer about it, about the individual songs and the impression they make on me, then I can understand it better.

Actually, when I started all this, I planned to do this myself (in a different manner but with the same intention), when the whole thing is done. I guess some people might be surprised that SIT is seen as better than Powerslave and most other albums. In the survivors the songs from this album never did that well, and in SMX infamous album elimation thread (was that the title?) SIT was gone soon. I guess that several people who enjoy SIT so much don't play such games as much as the ones who like it less. On the other hand, we're not done yet. These were "only" the 1980s. ;)

Re: The 1980s - album rankings per person

I will get round to voting for the remaining tracks on Iron Maiden, Killers, The Number of the Beast, Powerslave and Somewhere in Time. I will start with the debut - I think I'm only one or two short on that one.

Re: The 1980s - album rankings per person

Let's not forget we all may have different criteria on how we assign the points. Myself, I'm keeping it all in the relation to other Maiden songs only, so it's pretty obvious that the worst Maiden song will get only one point. If we did a comparison with other music in general, most of my grades would be up there at 9 or 10, and that's pretty pointless, in my eyes.

Also, I see a ten point scale as a five star scale with "half stars", i.e. 10 points equals 5 stars, 9 points is 5 1/2 and so on. That's just the rating I am most familiar with and the one I have in my head when voting. So if someone gives a song 5 points, in my heads that equals 2 1/2, which is still not all that bad.

Re: The 1980s - album rankings per person

I know everyone has its own criteria but even so, why would the worst song need to have one point?
If you'd have a job as a reviewer, and you'd work for 10 years at RockHard, would you then also have to rate at least one album of your favourite band with a 1?

Now this is pointless in my eyes but maybe I'm overseeing something important.

Would you enlighten me this philosophy, (even if it's yours and not mine)?

Re: The 1980s - album rankings per person

If you're ranking only on a list of Iron Maiden songs, then you have to establish a scale, 1-10. It's how ranking stuff works.

Re: The 1980s - album rankings per person

I know that a 1 is an option. I respect it if people use that option.

Still it's curious if a teacher would have to give one student a 1, only because has to give at least one 1 per year, or because that student is the worst student of the class.

If I was a reviewer at Rock Hard, I was reviewing Iron Maiden albums in comparison to other albums by other bands. Here, I am reviewing Iron Maiden songs in comparison to other Iron Maiden songs. If I have a scale of 1-10, to me that means the best song gets 10, the worst one gets 1. Otherwise, there wouldn't need to be a single point option, and you could go on saying: "Every Maiden song scores at least 5 in comparison to all other music, so let's have the scale start at 5!"

Re: The 1980s - album rankings per person

Thanks.

Am I right that:

Your philosophy is that a 1 has to be the worst Maiden song, or the worst Maiden song has to get a 1, regardless of any set of criteria besides that philosophy itself, while
I say: the lowest grade (of my choice, not necessarily a 1) has to be the worst Maiden song, or the worst Maiden song has to get the lowest grade (of my choice, not necessarily a 1).

I do this because to me a 1 means: total crap shit

Since there is no Maiden song total crap shit to me, I'm not going to give a 1.
I swear I'd give a Maiden song a 1 if a song was total crap shit to me.

And don't forget, I am also reviewing Iron Maiden songs in comparison to other Iron Maiden songs. But I don't forget the meaning of the grades.

It's not that terrible. Look at my album rankings. I am not using your system and more than the half of my rankings are nearer to 8 instead of 9 and 10.

Yes.

So apparently it's a naming issue. If you want to get closer to what I think, you can simply rename "1" with the name of your least favourite and "10" with the name of your favourite song and call it the "Iron Maiden Scale". Totally useless for comparisons with other scales such as the "Black Sabbath Scale" or the "Judas Priest Scale". Unless you work out a conversion formula, so in the end, The Apparition would score 5 on the "Black Sabbath Scale", for instance, and Heaven and Hell would still score 10 on the "Iron Maiden Scale".

But, since saying "Lord of Light scores a Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner on the Iron Maiden Scale" is awkward, I settle for the scores LooseCannon is offering.

Sorry, I edited my previous post rather late. Hope it contributes to show the differences in our views.

Re: The 1980s - album rankings per person

I'm more in line with Forostar here. I give 10 to songs I love, and 1 to songs I think are awful. I actually think it would be more interesting if everyone did this, because then we'd see how different members rated their least favourite Maiden songs relative to really bad music. I have so far not gone below 4 and I probably won't either. There may be a few more fours, but not many.

I mean, I thought the purpose of the poll was to see how much each individual song was appreciated by the members, not to find yet another way to rank Maiden songs relative to each other. That has been done to death. Thus, I find it more interesting to see how people rate Maiden songs relative to music in general.

Perun states that he would probably give most Maiden songs 9 or 10 if seen in relation with music in general. Others might go much lower for their least favourite song (for example, I've done that).

But first of all, I really think this choice should not be up to each voter, it should have been dictated by the poll's administrator (LooseCannon). As it is now, some rate the songs relative to music in general, others rate them relative to other Maiden songs only. Of course, with many voters for each song we'll still see the relative order between the songs becoming fairly accurate.

Just my two cents.

If that's the essence of all this, then it's indeed better if the criteria are absolute (the meaning of a grade is known and fixed). It's more understandable to see how someone values a song, or better: how that value represents the appreciation.

That's a nice thought indeed.

Nah, I think the reason is that Powerslave's most popular songs (Aces High, Rime, Powerslave) are held by most people to be better than Somewhere in Time's most popular songs (Alexander, Wasted Years, the title track maybe?), and the survivors promote individual songs, not albums.  However, SIT's least popular songs are still more popular than Powerslave's least popular songs, i.e. SIT is much more consistent.  Therefore, when you take the album averages, a lot of people get very similar scores for the two albums.  I didn't give a single 10 to a SIT song (I did for Powerslave, PoM, IM and TNOTB), yet it was clearly the highest in my ratings.

I am aware of the difference in our views, I just wanted to make mine a bit more clear so there would be no misunderstandings. :)

I agree with Wingman when he says that the criteria of the poll should have been clear from the start. But I say let's wait till this is done and see what the end results tell us.

Re: The 1980s - album rankings per person

Good idea Per.

@Invader: I gave 5 10's for SSOASS but it still doesn't have the highest album ranking. :)
