Adapting old songs to the 3-axe lineup

I know, I don't know if they purposely mixed up Phantom's solos or what.

Hmm no clue, I guess not, maybe they forgot the order, even! :)

Also, Janick did the whole shared solo w/ Adrian on 22 Acacia in '03.

Not the whole. More like the half. It starts with the part when you hear the harmony, and everything after that.

Also, he did Charlotte the Harlot for the two gigs it was played.

That's what I said.

Conclusion (with help of LC, to be honest: he has a point!):
Janick took over 2 authentic Adrian Smith solos (what a quantity!!):
-Hallowed Be Thy Name
-Revelations

Note on Hallowed live vs album: I think both the Rock in Rio version and the Beast Over Hammersmith versions are far superior.

And speeding-up has done great things for a lots of songs. Phantom on Maiden Japan is intense as hell. Really the only songs where the speed-up has bothered me is Hallowed, which varies from recordings, with Hammersmith being the slowest, Donington 88, Death on the Road, Maiden Stockholm (ie. ed till I'm dead-tour) and Rock in Rio being great, and LAD being medium. The second song is Stranger in a Strange Land. That song really gets killed when they speed it up. Looses all the heavy.

I usually feel that apart from those examples, there's not a single live-song that isn't superior to the album version. And most songs have become a lot better with three guitars. The Clairvoyant being the only one that gets a bit funky with Janick's licks.

Wasted Years? Sea Of Madness? Heaven Can Wait? I think that the orginal SIT material can't be done better, live.

Gotta say I can't speak for Sea of Madness, since I've heard very few SIT-bootlegs, but I think both Wasted Years and Heaven Can Wait sound better live than on the album, yeah.

I guess it's simply personal, but I find that there's much more energy and erhm... ooomph, in the live versions, and unless the pacing is changed so drastically that it loses the weight, or messes up the lyrics, it's usually just better live.

Either way, I guess we'll find out next summer if they can be better live :p

Well, I admit that Heaven Can Wait and Wasted Years are very good live tracks, although I find that the chorus in Wasted Years always sounds mediocre, compared to the studio version.
Most SIT tracks are very demanding for the vocals. The songs are difficult to execute. On stage, the typical SIT sound can’t be produced that well either.

It’s not a coincidence that only one(!) SIT-track appeared on a live album.

Still, I look forward to witness SIT tracks as hell! Somewhere in Time is Maiden’s most forgotten album (together with Virtual XI) , and I wonder how they’re gonna deal with this in 2008. Time to pay respect to Somewhere In f**cking Time !

;)

Hmm.. hmm.. technically, you're right, although Wasted Years did appear on Maiden England, and as a B-Side to Out Of The Silent Planet...

..and as a b-side to the Hallowed Be Thy Name single, back in 1993. But it says enough to me that it wasn't chosen for any live album that Maiden ever made.

Next year Maiden can't escape from this material anymore! So it shall be written. AND so it shall be done!  ;)

I'm a bit divided on this. I would sure love to hear some SIT-tracks as these are played more rarely than others. Unfortunately, as there are some great songs there. On the other hand, Powerslave and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son are my two favourite Maiden albums ... I could actually live with a set list where all songs except for a few were from these two.

But I would have loved it if the guys in Maiden would be a bit unpredictable this time and open the set with "Caught somewhere in time". Dammit, I can't find a smiley playing air guitar  :)

On the official website the band photo for Somewhere Back In Time no longer has the Somewhere In Time and Seventh Son Eddies book-ending the Powerslave Eddie.  It has been changed to reflect Powerslave/Live After Death 100%.

This subtle image change makes me very nervous that Deja-Vu or Stranger In A Strange Land will not be played...

...maybe in rehearsals the boys found the 3-axe attack complimented the Live After Death material and decided to focus 100% on this.

To ease my anxiety...please return the SIT and Seventh Son Eddies to the band photo!!!  This tour is about these two classic albums as well.

Could someone post both pictures on this forum to compare? Thanks in advance! :)
BTW, I would't count much on songs which have never been played before.

Deja-vu was mentioned as an unrealistic wish, but 6 or so from these two albums (that have been played live...or Walking on Glass) would be nice.

I do not know how to post the pics, but the original still sits in the archived news on the official site, under:
