As some visitors to the chatroom may know, I've been working on a Winamp playlist that is basically a timeline of rock music from 1965 to 2005. I tried to include about five songs per year, with a "one song per artist per year" policy. Of course it didn't always work out that way and some years are more prominent than others.
I'm going to post the entire generated (and slightly edited) HTML playlist below.
Before I do that, I want to make some things clear, though. This is basically a "road map" guide through the decades, and mostly made for personal reference. I'm only posting it at all because many people have found interest in the project and also helped me out with suggestions and occasionally also a track.
It is not a top list of any sort. I am grateful for any suggestions, but I do not appreciate comments like "you missed ... there" or "how could you include that song??" Every song included was hand-picked and carefully considered, and I often had difficulties choosing them from some great albums. Needless to say, my inclusion of songs (and sometimes even bands) is entirely subjective.
I will keep the public informed on further progress of this via my last.fm blog (user: ThePerun). I hope it is useful to you nevertheless. It certainly was/is fun to create and also provided me with a good share of insight in the history of rock music, and maybe you will benefit from it too.
I only included music I actually have. My collection is limited, and many great bands aren't included at all. I hope to change this in the future, but for now here is the first (painfully incomplete) version.
