A Matter of Life and Death Dissection

AMOLAD is just incredible. The riffs, melodies, solos, and especially lyrics are all easily among Maiden's best. The songs fit together perfectly on a thematic and musical level. The arrangements are also quite complex for Maiden, with many instances of beautifully layered guitars. Listening with headphones is necessary to truly comprehend this album. The production perfectly suits these tracks too, giving a raw, dark atmosphere. Bruce is at his best as well, giving a spirited and emotional performance. Finally, the album ends with FTGGOG, Lord of Light, and The Legacy, the best 1-2-3 punch in the IM catalog in my opinion.

This.

AMOLAD is the anti-TNotB.

AMOLAD's strength is its consistency. Songs that would be regarded as weak on other albums (Pilgrim, OOTS) work here. They fit in the flow right. But if you take these songs individually, out of AMOLAD context, most of them aren't quite as good. FTGGOG works in the album but seems repetitive alone.

Compare to TNotB, which is stocked full of classic songs (Hallowed, title track, Children, 22) and yet doesn't give the same "complete organic album" feel.
I agree with everything here except AMOLAD songs not working on their own. I think that holds true for some songs, but I also think at least half of the songs rank among some of the best they've ever done.

That's it!
I always felt TNotB is somehow less than the sum of its parts... For me, SSoaSS, XF and AMOLAD are the most "more than sum of their parts" albums :ok:

OK, so...Like being the antithesis of one of the most legendary metal albums of all time would be a good thing? AMOLAD isn't worthy even of cleaning The Mighty Beast's cloven hooves with it's tounge!

To me AMOLAD is exceptionally weak and boring, but I do have a theory of why it's popular: THE HYPE! The band really Went out of their way to praise this album, even playing all of it live. And of course, fanboys jumped on it and said it was the best album they'd ever done. Because if they play all of it live, it must be, riiiiight? Then it just snowballed from there. Average Joe listens to the album and Thinks : "Uhhm, not too good". T hen Average Joe goes on the web and sees all the praise for the album and average Joe Thinks "Uuhm...maybe I missed something here?" And so he listens again, but he still doesn't Think it's very good. However, since Average Joe wants to be like everyone else, he Thinks the fault is with him, not with the album. So he listens again and again, and somewhere along the way Average Joe starts to Think he loves the album too, and goes back on the web and writes his own HEARTFELT opinion about how this album is a masterpiece, a modern Classic, better than 80's Maiden, etc etc... and then ANOTHER Average Joe reads the Review of the first Average Joe, and the process repeats...

What a complete and utter load of crap your talking there!

I respect people's opinions and if you think that A matter of life and death is a poor album fine. If you think it's a decent album but no where near as good as the 80's albums then fine. But to post such a load of waffle where your basically saying that everyone who loves the album is a brain dead sheep who's only saying they love it because they have been brainwashed is massively disrespectful to the opinions of others.

Since I've been reading this forum I can see that a lot of posters are quite young and only started to listen to Maiden either at the start of or during the reunion era so it stands to reason they have a lot of connection to the reunion albums. That's not to say their blind to other albums but the first few albums you listen too which gets you into a band will always be special and possibly revered above others for that reason.

The first album I heard by maiden was seventh son back in 1990 and that has always remained my favourite album as it was so good to my ears that it got me to delve into their catalogue and become a fan. The first album they released after I became a fan was fear of the dark and that album always holds a special place too. Never quite understood the hate that album gets as I think it's quality plus it sold a shed load so others must think the same. It was a number 1 album in the UK and that was back when you had to sell pretty well to get a number 1 as this was pre internet days.

Back on topic a matter of life and death is a superb album and my favourite of the reunion era. I'm fine if others don't like it but I love it.

Playclassics, your name on this forum alone plus the other posts I've seen from you show your not interested in anything past the 80's albums and you only seem to post negativity to troll and get a reaction. Well you got one from me. try and show a bit of respect for others opinions in the future and stop being antagonistic looking for an argument.

I am to aggre with you Play The Classics because I am Average Joe too. I do not think AMOALAD is too good. I enjoy the song "Brighter than A Thousand suns" because that is my name. I am happy that the Iron Maidens named their song after me. That is why AMOOLAD is the best Iron Maidens album, because it is not so good as the new album.

I believe that you can be my friend, Play The Classics. Can you please message the moderators and ask them to remove my ban so I can post whatever I want. I will be the friend of Play The Classics because he is wise, knowing that AMLD is the best Iron Maidens albums. If the moderators lift my ban then I can log in to the forum and be good friend to Play The Classics. I cannot log in to the website, please help me Play The Classics, you are my new friend now.

You gotta love this guy. I know I do.

Guys can you please stop responding to every single PlayClassics post? I know it's hard to resist ignoring someone who spouts nonsense but I don't want every thread turned into a discussion about him full of his post quotes. Ignore him.
