50 greatest metal albums

IronDuke

Ancient Mariner
A friend sent me this link yesterday. I figured it should be posted. It's some random dude's list of the top 50 greatest metal albums of all time. Maiden seems fairly well-represented, but I don't agree with all of the choices (NoTB is only in the high 40's for cryin' out loud, and Brave New World isn't there at all! Ack!)

so check it out and make some comments:

There are too many changes I'd have to make in order to agree with him to make it worth my time. I mean, all those Sabbath albums and not BNW/DOD? Mercyful fate ahead of Judas Priest? Not one Judas Priest album in the top 20s (I didn't look any further than that ;) )

Well, I guess taste is an option to some ^_^ ^_^

Interesting choice he has made, yet the "newest" band in his list is Down (even though Down is fronted by Pantera's Phil Anselmo), all other bands started recording at least 15/20 years ago. Therefore, he is suggesting nothing good or no decent band has come out to warrant its inclusion in his top 50 over the last 10-15 years. Has metal gone that dour?

Has he not heard of Biomechanical? :D

I think it's a very good list. We could quibble over the positioning of some albums, and that fact that the list isn't terribly diverse - my rough count is only 17 different bands - but I own 39 of those albums and I think they're all great.

Hey I saw you also added Tierra Santa, the Spanish Iron Maiden ! :)

I haven't read much about them on this forum. Most Maidenfans might not even know about them. Do you know more albums? My favorites are probably Sangre de Reyes and Indomable. My favorite track is Dracula :)

The live album they released in 2003 is very enjoyable imo. I don't know their 2006 release. Here is more discography info: http://www.metalstorm.ee/bands/discogra ... and_id=324

Tierra Santa Discography:
Medieval- 1998
Legendario- 1999
Tierras de Leyenda- 2000
Sangre de Reyes- 2001
Indomable- 2003

Their Latest release is Apocalypsis and I think the single is "Nerón" (Nero) Very good band. My favorite song by far is "Una Juventud Perdida"... The saddest song... ever.

I only have Tierras de Leyenda- 'obsucre' stuff like this is really hard to get in my area- but I really dig it. When I play it, I usually play it twice in a row (or even more) because I can't get enough of it.

Obscure? in EUROPE?! Hell it's only two countries down from yours!!! Unbelievable. well, I can always send you mp3's :D

They have a 2006 album out now (didn't hear it yet). And don't forget their live album (also 2003, I think).

Very true, Apocalypsis is 2004 and their 2006 release is "Mejor Morir en Pie"... That's two cd's I have to hunt down hehe

Reality check --> Tierra Santa isn't actually all that great.

go listen to Mago De Oz.  preferably the 2 gaia albums, finisterra and Belfast.

These guys also covered "IM - Strange World" although not the greatest of covers.  The best maiden cover was DT covering the the #of the beast album.

Cool band Mago De Oz. I think their cover of Strange World is quite good, I like the folkish atmosphere they added to it; the ending is also very cool (a fast reinterpretation of "The Prophecy" outro, if my memory doesn't betray me :) )
I wouldn't say the same of entire Number Of The Beast covered by Dream Theater...I found it a bit too...strained :D
(Personal opinions, as always ;) )
