2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil

Great game!

Not very well played here and there but very entertaining. Belgium was the better side, except this last 15 minutes... They underestimated a little bit the USA, i think, after the second. USA is a team with heart. And Howard did a game to remember.

Couldn't agree more on everything you've said! Belgium were definitely the better side skill wise, and I think that class was what ultimately told in the end. Although they did ride their luck near the end! I don't think they were expecting the Americans to have such spirit and heart after going two down in extra time, it was like they were shellshocked. lol On the evidence of both of today's games, I'd give Belgium a great chance of dispatching Argentina. I think Argentina will need more of their other players other than Messi to step up and start performing, or Belgium will knock them out! Belgium started the tournament slowly, but gradually, their great skill is starting to show. But great game tonight! :)

Everybody knows France is my favourite team always has been and always will be. But honestly with the final 8 remaining teams left I feel no hate, hold no grudge towards any of them.
With that said how in the hell is it that Germany and France play first and Netherlands Costa Rica will be the last quarterfinals game?

Great game. Let's hope for more of this in the quarter-finals.

France vs Germany
Colombia vs Brazil
Argentina vs Belgium
Netherlands vs Costa Rica

From what we've seen so far, the first three should be very close matches. The last one would of course be expected to be more one-sided, but one never knows ...
I am not sure if anyone already mentioned but all number ones from the groups have reached the quarter finals. Not a single number two.
edit: Just saw Night Prowler mentioned it.

Haven't had time to check but I wonder if this has already happened before.

Netherlands? Costa Rica has impressed a lot. Ruiz is awesome. Don't dare to predict anything yet.

Belgium must kick Argentina out of the tournament. I think Germany will beat France. And I hope Columbia beats Brazil.

The answer is: indeed. Since the existence of the quarter finals (1986) it's the first time this ever happened.

As you all maybe have noticed: Europe and 'America' dominate in this World Cup: 4 of each with the last 8.

Since 1982 only 4 countries outside these continents have reached the quarter finals:

1990: Cameroon
2002: Senegal & South Korea
2010: Ghana

Europe has done better compared to 2010. In South Africa only 3 European teams (Netherlands, Germany and Spain) reached the QFs.

The 1990s was the era of European dominance: In 1994: seven! And in 1990 and 1998 six. In 2006 there were also six countries from Europe reaching this stage.

Let this not be too promising (2001, under 20 World Cup: Netherlands with Robben and Huntelaar, under Van Gaal(!), loses from Costa Rica with 1-3):

@Forostar - LOL I don't think there's much need to worry. :) There can be an upset of course, but I think Holland will just have too much for Costa Rica. As long as the Dutch are switched on, and don't underestimate Costa Rica, they should win quite comfortably. Costa Rica looked poor against Greece, and will have to improve a lot on that performance to have any chance against the Dutch. Hopefully Holland can get all the way through to the final. After Spain won the last world cup, Holland are definitely now, the greatest footballing nation to have never lifted the trophy. It'd be great to see them do it this time around!

OK, a "bit" more bravoure then:

Some people here are talking about a trauma-tour:

Remember the three World Cup finals we lost?
1974: from (West) Germany
1978: from Argentina
2010: from Spain

We can cross Spain from that list, and there is a possibilty that we'll meet the other two on our way to glory. Ultimate victory, ultimate revenge, 3 in 1-cleansing of these three world cup traumas.

In order, the teams from the last 8 I'd like to see win this world cup:

1. Holland
2. Belgium
3. Colombia
4. Germany
5. Costa Rica
6. France
7. Brazil
8. Argentina

1. Colombia
2. Belgium
3. Costa Rica
4. France
5. Netherlands
6. Germany
7. Argentina
8. Brazil

Haven't had time to check but I wonder if this has already happened before.

It hasn't. First time. Then again, it hasn't been that long since the introduction of 8 groups.

Or, for that matter, since the introduction of quarter finals (also see @Forostar's post earlier on this page: LINK).

Speaking of - the current format is actually the most long-lived format for the World Cup. 32 teams with an initial group stage of 8 groups and a round of 16 afterwards has not been in use since France '98, in other words, this is the fifth World Cup using this format.
