Iron Maiden played the Südweststadion in Ludwigshafen last night. Along with, I suppose 15-20,000 people, I was there.
I departed from Nuremberg with my brother at around 11.30, facing a ride of several hours by train. Fortunately, finding the stadium wasn't that hard from the main railway station, as it was ca. 10 minutes by foot, signs everywhere, and of course dozens of crazed Maiden fans along the way.

Lauren Harris came onstage at ca. 16.30 or something like that and played for around 20 minutes. Afterwards came Mastodon. There's not much I can/want to say about them, but I found the ice cream I was having during their gig more exciting and interesting. Papa Roach was more of the same, although I must confess that their vocalist is a skilled entertainer, and was somewhat interesting to watch. Unfortunately, the music was hideous.
Next up were In Flames, who entered the stage to a wild crowd. I personally found them rather boring and ordinary, but let's leave it at that.

After what seemed like an eternal wait, Maiden finally stormed the stage at about 21.00. They started out by playing "Different World", "These Colours Don't Run" and "Brighter Than A Thousand Suns", followed by "Wrathchild" and "The Trooper". Nothing unexpected so far, but then they played "Children Of The Damned", which made the crowd -including me- go absolutely mental. "Ben Breeg", "Greater Good" and "Number Of The Beast" followed, but during that time, it became apparent that there was some sort of problem with the microphone. As a matter of fact, during "Fear Of The Dark", Bruce had to stand still in the right hand corner with his back to the audience, because that was the only position in which the mike worked. You could clearly see -and hear!- him bollocking the sound engineers during "Run To The Hills", and from this point on, Bruce was noticeably pissed off. As a matter of fact, druing the encore, Bruce missed most of his crowd interaction. He missed the last lines of "Two Minutes To Midnight", and did actually not utter his classic "Scream for me" during Hallowed Be Thy Name. Only "Iron Maiden" (before the encores, obviously), and "The Evil That Men Do" (between "Two Minutes" and "Hallowed") seemed to go without any great problems. When the band came onstage for the encores, Bruce apologised and said they had a new sound system crammed with all new technology, which was essentially "a piece of shit". He also announced the band were going to come back to Germany in 2008 with some pyramids.
The rest of the band were as always, but with Bruce mostly outside of the action, Steve and Jan were the ones working the audience.
Despite these problems, the gig was great, although it was disappointing to find out they only played four songs from "Number Of The Beast" instead of five, as they announced. But as they played "Children Of The Damned", I'm not complaining. The crowd was also pretty brilliant. There were a few moshpits, but they were tolerable and at places when they made sense (unlike Dortmund, where they did that during the intro of "Brighter Than A Thousand Suns)- the moshing was worse during the In Flames gig.

Cheers also to those two English blokes who took us to Nuremberg after the gig. In case you read this, Rich and James, big thanks!

Thanks for the review.
Glad you had a good time!
Makes sense now...read somewhere else in another review that the gig was great but they should use better microphones. I wondered what the hell the reviewer was on about! Lol.

Whoops!
I guess I got confused there... Ludwigshafen, Duisburg, Düsseldorf... you know, the names sound so similar :P And you're bound to be confused if you're going to both gigs ;)

Cheers for the preview Perun, nice sort of an appetizer for the Fields of Rock which I will be attending next week end. Given that the band does no festival appearance in France this summer, let's move up north! The good point is that I have a friend in Amsterdam who will have us on the sofa afterwards, kind of a free B&B :P plus we go there for free thanks to my mate's company car.  ;) Thinking'bout it, it almost costs a fortune when you have to go & check the band that far away from your "3rd world country" (regarding its shitty position on rock'n'roll global scale) But, when the going gets tough, the tough gets going or so they say.
And true, additional cuts from TNOTB would have been mostly appreciated here (Prisoner or 22, let's play it heads or tails!)
Anyhoo, we might be treated to their live rendition by next summer in the country of plastic pyramids  :yey:
