02.03.2008 - Iron Maiden SBIT Tour, São Paulo- Brazil (spoilers inside !)

Well fellas, I'm still "under the influence" of Maiden, the most addictive drug ever created, but I will try to drop a few lines to you about last night's concert here at my hometown...

Many spoilers ahead

I got to the stadium at 4 PM, the concert was scheduled to start at 8 PM, so I had to find something to do in the 4 hour interval. My favorite past time in this sort of occasion is simply to watch people, an anthropological sort of thing. To my amusement most of the crowd was formed by people in their 30s-40s (where I fit in) , almost no "teens" or young adults. Many "truemetals" around !!!! Those biker style geezers !!!!!! It was going to be in fact a revival tour.Those who were there had a "strong bonding" to Maiden. No time for newbies or Emos. It was time to watch our "friends" play some old favorites to us !

Talking about Emos, I got truly disappointed with Lauren Harris's band. What a waste. Thought she would keep the classic metal flame alive but I was wrong. She's cute and hot but her band is not. It's pure teenage emo rock. And that's really bad. The crowd wasn't very receptive with them of course.

As Lauren Harris and her band left the stage a thunderstorm hit the stadium. I mean "the thunderstorm". As Forostar predicted and cursed on one of my first posts here at the forum, it rained severely ! Forostar is the real Clairvoyant definitely !  :bigsmile: To my luck I was comfortably sitting on the "premium side" of the stadium, covered area, so no drops of rain hit me. It was funny indeed watching the main crowd cheering as the rain fell...at that time the stadium was packed and those guys in the front of the stage were probably sticked to the other with sweat.

After a rain like that it was obvious the stage floor would be completely soaked...and it did. But the band had to come in, it was 8:15PM already...

All of a sudden UFO's Doctor Doctor started playing in the PA (what a band,what a song, that's what rock is all about, thanks Steve for enjoying them). We knew it was a matter of seconds to Maiden hit the stage...

Lights go down...comes Transylvania on the PA along with the EdForce One video...Jesus, the crowd went berserk. Transylvania fades out and Churchill's speech fades in....man, it's absolutely 1985 to listen to that in person. Amazing. That's all I can say.

The rain stopped and Aces High kicked in with the band careful to avoid falls as the stage floor was very slippery. Bruce went from one side to the other sliding like a kid !!!!! It was fantastic. Some stage crew were desperately trying to clean the stage with towels and mops...Bruce obviously took one of the mops and started singing and cleaning all at once. He was on fire yesterday.

I won't mention here the "song by song" as we all know the set list is the same at least in this first leg of the tour. Maybe in America and Europe it will change...but I will summarize the highlights (in my point of view)

- The band is playing flawlessly. Bruce performs like he's 23. Steve keeps on playing with his unique technique...he's the boss. Dave and Adrian are by far the greatest and best guitar duo in the metal kingdom. Man, they are like twins. One completes the other's guitar style. They match perfectly.
- The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is the first "most expected moment" along with Powerslave. What an honour it's to watch those two in person.
- The 7th son encore is fantastic :Moonchild + The Clairvoyant are hot
- The classics : TNOTB, RTTH, TMTM,HBTN, all of them, it's always a pleasure to watch them playing those songs
- Fear of the Dark : I got upset when I read that Maiden decided to put FOTD on this tour setlist. Me so naive. me so stupid  !Fear of the Dark is probably one of the greatest examples of band-audience synergy ever. It's goose-bumping ! Very emotional moment. This is the time the audience and Maiden get connected the most in the concert. Lovely.
- HOT SPOILER HERE : the band was really "touched" by the Sao Paulo crowd dedication and devotion to Maiden (as always). Bruce said that they will CCOME BACK IN A YEAR (EXACTLY ONE YEAR FROM NOW ACCORDING TO BRUCE) and that they will bring all the pyros and effects used on the American and European legs (I've recorded the concert on my mobile camera and I will find Bruce's speech about that and post it here so you guys can check it word by word). In my opinion (just guessing alright) Maiden will launch a second part of the same tour next year...different set list...maybe next time we will have the unforgettable "Blade Runner theme + Caught Somewhere opening" or even SSOASS as the epic !!!! I'm looking forward to it.
- The Brazilian (São Paulo) audience is the rowdiest, loudest, most Maidenmaniac in the planet. Sorry guys, but it's not me saying that. It's Bruce. I will find those excerpts too and share them with you...

Thanks a bunch Maiden ! I love you all (including Janick !)  It was one of the greatest shows I've been to. Hope to see you soon next year.

Lauren Harris emo? I mean, I dont particularly like her music either, but it is certainly not emo!
What a generalisation, im insulted you think this way about us, the younger generation of Maiden fans.

Its innocent pop rock, no where near emo in any way at all, at least thats how she was when I saw her on the AMOLAD tour, has she gone insane with new songs or something?
Generally, it seems people over-use the word just to describe types of music/bands they dont like, just like metalcore and nu-metal are mis-used.

Holy Jesus man, calm down. I'm sorry ok ? But that wasn't definitely a regular "new album" concert. There were many people in there who weren't at the 2004 (DOD tour) concert because they weren't 100% connected to the band at that time. This tour brings MANY memories back to those who LIVED the 80s, for those who bought Maiden albums at the same day they were released back in the 80s.

Emo and commercial rock for me are the same. I disagreed with you when you called that "innocent pop rock", just that.

Yeah, I agree with that, its just the way you worded it originally was almost like "thank god we got rid of the annoying younger fans, with their emo crap", essentially.

While emo and commercial rock go hand in hand right now, its not really a definition of emo, lol, case in point, it leads to bands that are not emo being thrown together with those that are.....and thats not what genres are about.

Oh, and I dislike emo just as much as you, Im just saying its not quite what Lauren is playing.

Lauren is such a cutie hot chick (sorry 'Arry) but her mates in the band are emos...LOL, the drummer is such a rare piece of modern weirdness ! I'm sure he's got a bag of nail polishers and eyeliners with him backstage !

For me nu-metal and emos are so poisonous/hazardous to rock as grunge was back in the early 90s !

But I'm sure that as long Lemmy and Steve Harris live rock is safe and unharmed !

^bah, you need not worry. Rock has always been around and going strong ever since it was invented.

I personally like grunge, but regardless, rock was still great in the 90s and there are plenty of great new bands to this day. Just because the media's attention is on all this metalcore/nu-metal/emo stuff, doesnt mean we will see a decline in rock.

I always laugh when people say things like "'insert band here' saved metal", when metal never was in such a decline that it needed "saving".

I seemed to remember Lauren's band being alright, pity the guitarist was too busy oggling Lauren to actually concentrate on his playing. Although that was back in 2006, so maybe its a different band now?
 
I never heard her band before yesterday...

Her guitar player is crap. Pure crap. I play the guitar for 22 years now and I can tell you when a guitar player is crap. That guy tried to outshine Lauren all the time...he even tried to solo with the guitar behind his neck, but obviously it sounded awful. He looks like a Schecter Guitars endorser (most of them are emos with "feelings and emotions")

Now I will get kicked out of here in the butt : when I saw that guitar player it reminded me a lot Janick Gers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Same level !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But Lauren's learnt the lesson very well : placed one foot on the monitor (just like papa) and used a lot her hands to "feel the song" (just like Bruce Bruce) ! Hope she finds a better band. She deserves it...just for being the daughter of one of rock's greatest bass players ever (in my TOP 5 are Steve, Phil Lynott, John Entwhistle, Geddy Lee and the great Bily Sheehan).

I was there too, on the front barrier, in front of Steve and Janick, with a red headband. That rain was a gift from Eddie, I'm sure of that, it was really hot in the front barrier... and the storm stopped right after Maiden hit the stage so, we can tell that it REALLY was Eddie's work, as a Rainmaker  :lol:
It was my first Maiden concert and the best night of my life. The crowd was WILD, it was really hard to keep my position the entire concert.
On the link below, there's a fuckin' awesome video, shot from a bulding, behind the stadium. Look at the crowd! It's astonishing, it's beautiful! I started to cry when I looked around the stadium...

Brazil is really different. It's a different crowd, a different passion. Iron Maiden is our religion.

I have recorded on video I guess 75% of the entire act...I was at the "covered seats" because I'm getting old and can't stand the barrier no more ! :lol: As soon as I'm able to download them from my phone I will put them on You Tube and share with everyone here.

It was also my first maiden show, and i still can't believe i saw them with my own eyes, with no screen between me and them! I was really close, just 3 or 4 meters from the stage! It was more than i could dream!

That rain  was really a gift from Eddie, but it was growing stronger and stronger and i was worried that the show could be cancelled, but thanks Eddie it didn't happen!

The audience was on fire. The band was surprised with the crowd (and they know what expect from the Brazilian audience), Steve Harris even bowed to us!!!

This show was better, not only better, but very MUCH better than all shows they did in Brazil before.

They'll come back next year and i'll be there too!
 
I've watched a couple of videos from various concerts on this tour now. I get the impression that Bruce
sounds much better during Aces High than he used to during the World Slavery Tour.
Was it like that at this show as well? That would be a good sign.

Yes, it was. In fact, Bruce's voice was great during all the show.
 
Excellent. Actually I have the impression that he is actually a better singer, technically, than he was in the 80's. (Thinking about live shows, of course). Maybe that's what's needed to keep going at age 50.
 
Yes, that's my opinion too. He's great live nowadays, and what's best, he's consistent. I think that performance of his life is really well documented on footage from Dortmund '83, but he had a lot of lousy performances on all tours until he departed. Listening to boots from Somewhere On Tour, sometimes he's really great, sometimes he's really not on the level (and that's not considering the second Sheffield night when he had a bad cold).

Nowadays, he sings rather well even with a minor cold. Check out the HBTN from Abbey Road '06.

There's probably some bootlegs I could hunt down to see for myself but what i want to know is...


i am not a Jani basher and it is only fair that he gets to share some of H's solos but does Adrian play his own solo on Rime of the ancient mariner?? It's one of his best IMO and i want to see him play it later this year in the uk??
