Favorite Maiden Album (2010 Edition, voting closed)

I find Piece of Mind to be one of the most inconsistent Maiden records - moments of pure bliss like Still Life, The Trooper, and Where Eagles Dare - and then the tracks you mentioned, as well as Die With Your Boots on (great verses, don't care for chorus or lyrics.)

    The Alchemist

Funny you mention that Ranko, I just listened to this song in the car after reading Jeff / DB's thoughts, and that's the line that stuck out to me too.  Anything but simplistic.  I suppose the only part that's a little simplistic is the "This was my house" line, but even that makes sense and is...

    The Alchemist

I appreciate where you're coming from, as the more cryptic meanings can be fun to read into and decipher.  However, for the subject matter and the narrative tone that they were going for, I like the historical name references.  It really got me curious (well, curious enough to read all the...

Album production, overall sound - loudness war?

I don't pretend to be a sound engineer, but it has more to do with compression and leaving "space" in the mix so you can hear the full tones and texture of the intstruments, as well as the whole impact of a louder or faster part of the song.

Official thread for Final Frontier discussion

I understand where you're coming from.  I buy physical CD's when possible from groups I closely follow - just in the past month or so I've acquired British Steel, a Mastodon record, BS's Tyr, The Final Frontier, and Rust in Peace Live (arriving on Thursday - woohoo!).  However, groups I'm more...

Nice!  Mine was: Atom & Evil Ear in the Wall (off Dio Years) Bible Black Fear Double the Pain Neverwhere Follow the Tears Eating the Cannibals Turn of the Screw Rock & Roll Angel Eliminated Breaking into Heaven because I found it boring (though I do enjoy it more now.)

I'll give this a shot.  I rearranged Heaven & Hell's The Devil you Know and it improved drastically (although TFF doesn't have much room for improvement.)

Album production, overall sound - loudness war?

Album sounds good to me.  A little hotter than A Matter of Life and Death, (which I love the recording and production on) definitely more messing around with the knobs on this one.  The gallop that kicks in on The Talisman is louder than the rest of the album, forcing me to dive for the volume...

    Dance of death

Only weak moments on the record for me were Wildest Dreams and Journeyman (though both improved live. ) Yes, there are some less memorable tunes but they hold up well when I go back and listen to them. I just think the album had a much more upbeat feel overall than most of Maiden's material...

    On repetitive choruses

I can understand that.  I just strongly disagree with Habberdasher's contention that repetition has gotten "much worse" with reunion Maiden.

    Why "Final Frontier"?

Starblind would have worked also I think. Listen, to the guys who want Eddie crucified or something outlandish like that, what would be the point?  The only thing they stand to lose is record sales, and there's not much to gain.  The biggest middle finger they can give "The Right" or anyone who...

    On repetitive choruses

Huh?  I thought LC just dispelled this idea that AMOLAD was repetitive in relation to the older material.  And The Final Frontier is the only song on the record with repetition in that vein.  How is that getting worse in the past decade at all?

    The Final Frontier charts' thread

As Nibblet projected earlier, TFF indeed stayed inside the top 20 on the Billboard, albeit at the 20th spot. http://www.billboard.com/charts/billboa ... lboard-200

    Why "Final Frontier"?

Satellite 15... The Final Frontier - obvious space theme El Dorado - searching for the fabled golden city, getting lied to and conned and eventually abandoned on a sinking ship Coming Home - Flying around the globe in a jet The Talisman - pilgrims or exiles fleeing their country in search of...

    Why "Final Frontier"?

I think its a fitting title. Starblind, El Dorado, Sat 15 TFF, Talisman, coming Home all have space and/or exploration themes.

Plus all the "negative" press just makes the band more desirable for kids to listen to.

    Best Iron Maiden Instrumental?

Losfer.  Such a great driving tune, could have easily been a hit with a little reworking and some lyrics.  I love the way it keeps coming back to the main riff/chord progression. Transylvania close second.  Those guitar melodies are outstanding.
