To mention Metallica again, At least Maiden have never had an album quiiiite as awfully produced as the clip fest that is Death Magnetic. In retrospect the songs all suck too but the production is heinous.
I remember thinking the process sounded interminable with Lars spending about six months to get a drum sound for the black album. It was worth it though, that album still sounds immense.
Some of you guys complaining about the weak guitar mix should listen to TXF. It could be WAY worse. Sounds like blaze is singing over an isolated bass and drum track and Janick and Dave are playing through an answering phone message in the next room.

I love the Brave New World and Dance of Death albums so much. The highs are wonderful. And I really enjoy the short songs from the Blaze era. Man on the Edge and Futureal would kill in a modern Maiden set
Just feels like the same riff and tempo over and over for decades. Needed Harry to crowbar in a gallop section like he did for Brighter than a thousand suns
Nicko was on fire on the Virtual XI tour. Listen to how fast and how energetically he plays fills on Futureal live in 98 (and 99 with Bruce). Yet he just plays straight through every song on the album. Very odd.
