Countdown to Senjutsu. 17 albums in 17 days.

Powerslave. Everyone loves this don't they, Maiden's golden child? Back in 1984, even my non-metal mates were boppin' to this. Even girls, who'd usually run screaming from me and my music would stay a little and nod in slight agreement, before I lost it, made a move and they reverted to type...

Countdown to Senjutsu. 17 albums in 17 days.

Piece Of Mind Nicko gives everyone a jolly good kick up the backside and helps them produce one of the finest records of their career. It's a perfect marriage between the neanderthal aggression of the sound that this thing makes coupled with the intricate intelligence of the music and its...

Countdown to Senjutsu. 17 albums in 17 days.

"Now, that's what I call Maiden" the fans cry, and I'm in agreement as to reference Beast's poppy nature, cos Maiden were never before or since as commercial as this. Now, I like some pop but usually feel undernourished afterwards, and this album, more than any other Maiden album, makes me feel...

Countdown to Senjutsu. 17 albums in 17 days.

My maiden Maiden purchase in November '81. I'd heard Women in Uniform which I hated, but a pal suggested Killers. So that dark evening cycling home from work with EMC3357 in my sports bag on my back, I flipped arse over tit without any reason, crashing in the road next to Eddie. The curse...

Countdown to Senjutsu. 17 albums in 17 days.

I played my old EMC3330, bought in '82 and still sounds great amid the occasional pops and crackles. I'm glad Birch didn't produce this as it gives it a uniqueness. All songs are strong as are performances. I love Charlotte with its calm centre where Paul shines, and then rips into the hardest...

The MAIDEN Years: 2018/19/20/21/22/ad infinitum (Rock in Rio and Nights of the Dead)

After borrowing Best of the Beast in winter 97-98 and liking the Blaze tunes, I bought X Factor. So like many, I suspect, I was an 'ex' to the band at this point and vice-versa, having ditched them post Fear. And listening to this feels like having lunch with a miserable, embittered old sow of...

    The headphones and speakers thread

Sennheiser HD 465 headphones which I've had for over a decade and use most days. Have to change the foam. Speakers are always best and I've recently attached my old Sonys from a reasonably priced, now deceased hifi system I bought in '99. I can't go loud unfortunately, so these suffice.

The MAIDEN Years: 2018/19/20/21/22/ad infinitum (Rock in Rio and Nights of the Dead)

I bought Fear about the same time I got Pantera's Vulgar Display of Power, the cover of which clearly displays the knocking out of Maiden. It'd be 5 years until they started to come round. Horrible drum sound, but Bruce is great. Be Quick is top notch, I never liked the title track much but it's...

The MAIDEN Years: 2018/19/20/21/22/ad infinitum (Rock in Rio and Nights of the Dead)

No Prayer is their least pretentious record, notable after the most pompous 7th Son. I detested Slaughter at the time, all that US west coast swagger, but now I think its lowbrow knuckle-dragging is great fun and highlights this album's uniqueness.

The MAIDEN Years: 2018/19/20/21/22/ad infinitum (Rock in Rio and Nights of the Dead)

It's not saturated like on the previous two albums.

The MAIDEN Years: 2018/19/20/21/22/ad infinitum (Rock in Rio and Nights of the Dead)

No Prayer felt like a letdown in 1990 but I always enjoyed it. As time passed its raw sound has elevated it greatly, putting it on a par with its synth-washed predecessor whose sound has dated somewhat. Personally I'd take the title track and Mother Russia over Hallowed and Infinite Dreams any day.

The MAIDEN Years: 2018/19/20/21/22/ad infinitum (Rock in Rio and Nights of the Dead)

If Powerslave is the sun, 7th Son is the moon. It's a great record, only Infinite Dreams drags a little. I used to love playing guitar along to this, Prophecy in particular which is hugely underrated. I've been watching ME recently which is so refreshing - no Fear!

Dance Of Death aged very well

The only studio album where every member receives a writing credit. It's a very unique record!

Dance Of Death aged very well

I bought the DVD-A at the time, about a year later I think, but it's a pain to play using up tv space an' all.

Was this the only album released on DVD Audio?

Dance Of Death aged very well

Album No. 13, it holds the unique position in that the real world timeline and my story timeline coexist simultaneously with this record. Nevermind, I'm mad.:nuts2: There's nothing here I actively dislike and a whole lot that I do like. New Frontier has a strong middle, Monsegur and Rainmaker my...

The MAIDEN Years: 2018/19/20/21/22/ad infinitum (Rock in Rio and Nights of the Dead)

At the time I felt there was a large step up from POM, PS having serious crossover potential, and all this a year before LAD was conceived. 2 mins is a perfect song. I saw them at Hammersmith again, this time taking 3 non -metal people, one of which was female! Saw Nicko in the pub prior to the...

The MAIDEN Years: 2018/19/20/21/22/ad infinitum (Rock in Rio and Nights of the Dead)

Back at Hammersmith in '83, this was the best Maiden gig I saw of 8. Good mix of songs, professional but still raw. I have the Heavy Birthday vinyl - Stockholm 5th June '83. Piece a favorite along with Killers and Powerslave.
