    Best New Music 2025 Edition

"Darkness Always Wins" is awesome. It recalls some old pop song so it feels like I've heard it before, but it is a great song. I sort of expected this to become their "Hail to the King", but it doesn't seem to happen? Lots of good music this year, but only two great albums so far - The Darkness...

    Steve Harris

First album had songs written like in 1990 (A World Without Heaven and Eyes of the Young are the oldest IIRC), and they played several songs which ended up on The Burning when I saw them in 2013 and 2015. So some songs were at least 7-8 years old on the second album. I reckon Steve and the band...

Read Damascus Station (2021) by David McCloskey, a spy thriller by a former CIA analyst. Does step into melodrama a bit too much to be regarded as realistic, but a very entertaining read nonetheless. Also read Black Sun (2019) by Owen Matthews, a historical thriller set in the last few days...

Read None of This is True (2023). A beach read, fast simple and not much substance. I like the idea of a thriller framed through a Netflix documentary based on the events... But for this sort of book to be fun it needs some crazy twists, and this book had none that weren't already obvious.

    Metal with female vocals

Anyone into Saraya? Here's "Tear Down The Wall", off When the Blackbird Sings (1991). More hard rock than metal, but the vocals are amazing.

Read With a Vengeance (2025) by Riley Sager. Todd Ritter is not a good writer, and with his pseudonym he's riding a wave of popular thriller/mystery novels penned by women. That this sort of guy writes very cynically thought out stories based on tropes, is of no surprise at all. Here he riffs...

    NOW WATCHING

Watched The Count of Monte Cristo (2024), the French movie. Rewatched The Count of Monte Cristo (2024), the English language mini-series starring Sam Claflin. Two adaptations, almost released simultaneously. Despite the popularity of the French movie, I found some jarring differences from the...

Read The Tusks of Exctinction (2024) by Ray Nayler. Science fiction thriller about mammoths brought back from the dead - led by the human consciousness of a 100-year dead elephant expert transferred into a mammoth-brain... Decent read. Also read The Year of the Locust (2023) by Terry Hayes...

Read Orbital (2023) by Samantha Harvey. A very short novel detailing the experiece of astronauts on the ISS. Not really any plot, very introspective. Decent read still, great language. Also read Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow (2022) by Gabrielle Zevin. A very beautiful novel about two...

Watched Lee (2023), a British biographical war drama starring Kate Winslet. Following a war correspondent (Winslet) through bits and pieces of WWII, including taking a picture in Hitler's own bathtub. Pretty powerful film, but a Hollywood production it ain't. I understand there was a lot to...

The Ministry of Time  (2024) by Kaliane Bradley. Near future, the British government has a time machine - but instead of sending people back, they retrieve historical people who were about to die. Our narrator is a "bridge", a sort of supervisor who is assigned to introducing Graham Gore (a...

Read The Fourth Consort (2025) by Edward Ashton. First contact science fiction, exciting and very well written. Despite being a major page turner of a read, it touches quite a bit on antrophology, honor and communication in a very exciting blend. Pretty good character work as well, both humans...

    The Concert Thread

Attended the Håkan Hellström concert on the 7th of June at Ullevi, Gothenburg. New attendance record at 73,781 at the stadium. What did I watch? An insanely well-directed musical set to some kind of weird indie-pop? It wasn't just a concert - but it was glorious. This guy sells out Ullevi 3...

Always (if you mean the IIHF World Championship). Sweden has a strong team and should go far on home ground. There's a massive difference in interest here compared to a decade ago, I'd say.

Read Bridge (2023) by Lauren Beukes. An alternate-reality/multiverse science fiction story, which is my kind of story - period. I enjoyed the fairly novel take on traveling between realities, the characters and the drive of the narrative.

Which albums turned you off from bands completely even if previous material was good?

I was a big fan of Europe. Both the 80's band that dropped "The Final Countdown", especially Out of this World (1988) and the reunited and modern sounding band that did superb records like Start from the Dark (2004) and Secret Society (2006). The latter which I consider their best album. In...
