That's fair. I'm not saying it doesn't make sense; power metal bands do similar sections in their songs all the time. It just doesn't align with my tastes and with what I was expecting from the rest of the song after the badass intro, verse and chorus.
I've never seen BNW as a concept album.
Wicker Man is about playing live music in front of large crowds.
Navigator is a story about seafaring dangers.
The title track is about the dystopian novel (though I'd argue it misrepresents the book quite a bit)
Blood Brothers is Steve's introspective...
Yeah, that part. It's obviously just my subjective experience, not making any factual statements. The change from E minor to E major in those sections sounds far too "happy-go-lucky" to me, for lack of a better term.
We'll need a video of SSOASS, the middle section was a disaster and almost fell apart once again. Adrian was concentrating hard and giving signals to Simon. He also seemed like he was cringing himself to death when he played one of the heavily delayed power chords wrong lol
Technically six :D
I suppose the quick repetition in succession of a part I don't enjoy make it feel like an eternity. There are some guitar licks at least, but it still feels monotonous to me. I'll take the ten minute version of TAATG any day over Sea of Madness.
Exactly! Montsegur starts out...
Yes and no, he was teasing the audience.
He said that they will be around for a long time. Then he said, they already have been (for 50 years) and then he turned it around and said "but I don't mean like that. I mean tonight. We are gonna play for a couple of hours or so".
So, he teased and...
I can give you another one as a bonus: Sea Of Madness. The only redeeming part of that song (imo of course) is the solo and the bridge right afterwards. I despise the main riff and verse, and the chorus isn't particularly fun either. Add to that the obnoxious amount of repeating the same line in...
BNW shares the same DNA as VXI (which makes sense considering almost half of it are leftovers from VXI, including lyrics by Blaze on Dream of Mirrors), just with better production and performances.
DoD was Steve taking a work-in-progress and declaring it as finished. It sucks that Kevin went along with it, but I don't think there was any convincing Steve otherwise.
You raise some good points.
To be a bit more charitable to what he was saying, maybe he's of the mindset: "capture it properly and you won't have to do much afterwards. Otherwise you have to spend hours upon hours salvaging the recordings".
But yeah, spending time to find the right sound is...
My issue with modern Maiden records isn't that they shy away from "studio trickery". It's that they left behind the perfectionism they had during 84-88. Listen to the overdubbed lead guitars on stuff like Losfer Words or The Duellists. The way they play nowadays is far too sloppy for sections...
