    Quest For Fire

6/10 Lyrics are famously weak, the chorus is cheesy, but this is nowhere near as bad as it's often made out to be. The instrumental sections are well planned and played. I had no idea this song was so hated until I looked on here. My guess with the opening line is that maybe Maiden hadn't fully...

    Revelations

9/10 A really strong song with melody and obligatory crowd interaction when played live. It's got so much going for it I'm tempted to give it a ten, but for some reason I can't put my finger on it doesn't quite make the premier league of Maiden songs for me.

    Flight of Icarus

9/10 One of the first songs that really grabbed me as I was discovering Maiden. Powerful vocals from Bruce (the "Let it go!" on Live After Death is brilliant too), and some stunning solos. When Dave starts mangling that B string from 3:19 on I usually get a strong mental image of Icarus...

    The Trooper

10/10 An iconic Maiden track which condenses many of their trademarks into four minutes. I've always liked their history songs which encourage you to dig deeper and find out more. Two great solos with the highlight for me being Adrian's repeated licks from 2:17 on. Those quick bends are...

    Still Life

9/10 This one should definitely be more well-known than it is, and I'm surprised it hasn't appeared on a best of compilation (as far as I know). Gorgeous playing from Dave in the intro, and lots of riffs that twist and turn in unexpected ways.

    Die With Your Boots On

7/10 Solid, but not one of my favourites. Something about the riffs seems a little too obvious, even though there are clever touches here and there.

    Where Eagles Dare

9/10 One of the all-time classic drum intros leads into some excellent riffs with interesting triplet ideas. Dave's lead work in this track always makes me think of flight. I hadn't seen the film the first time I heard this, but did soon after - it's also amazing!

    Commentary down?

Can anyone else access the commentary now? I keep getting one of these:

Janick describes the playing style of H, Dave and his own

Janick has summed up their playing styles really well! The first word that comes to mind when Dave's playing is "fluid", closely followed by "legato", which pretty much mean the same thing anyway. He takes more risks on stage than Adrian, who tends to stick closer to what's on the records...

    The Prisoner

8/10 Solid, but slightly too long.

    Hallowed Be Thy Name

10/10 'Hallowed Be Thy Name' blows me away every single time. Simple as that. With many songs, it's possible to work out how they work and why they have the effect on my ears that they do. With this one, I really have no idea. Is it the picked intro with the characteristic Maiden trick of...

    Total Eclipse

7/10 There are some excellent ideas in here, but unfortunately the least interesting riff seems to be the one that's repeated the most. Amazing vocals from Bruce at the end.

    Gangland

6/10 "Dead men tell no tales" is such a promising lyric for a chorus, but the melody is a bit lost on this one.

    22, Acacia Avenue

8/10 Good lyrics and some good riffs, but the different sections don't seem quite as seamless as they are in some other Maiden songs.

    The Number of the Beast

10/10 Solid gold Maiden classic - the national anthem of the Kingdom of Heavy Metal. Rhythmically one of the strangest riffs in rock. Infernal performance from Bruce Dickinson. Sounds more sinister when he sings "666" live rather than letting the crowd take over.

    Run to the Hills

10/10 One of the very best gallops, it really sounds like what it describes. Amazing vocals, outrageous guitar and bass playing, perfect lyrics. The fact that we've all heard it a million times doesn't detract from the quality of this tune.

    Children of the Damned

10/10 Outstanding vocals, powerful riffs and varied sections make the song an enthralling journey.

    Invaders

7/10 Filthy fast opener with some good riffs, but not as substantial as most of the other tracks on the album.

    Sanctuary

8/10 Good little rocker. I prefer the live versions, with the 'Keep Yourself Alive' riff and without the siren.

    Strange World

8/10 It's a strange one. Maiden with a case of the Floyds? Beautiful guitar playing, similar in feel to the playing on parts of 'Still Life' and 'Powerslave'.
