In terms of exposure, this lineup is enjoying far more reverence and respect than 80s era Maiden ever did. 80s Maiden lurked in the shadows; while they had occasionally exposure on MTV, they were very much an underground phenomenon (albeit a very successful one).
In terms of perceived...
Don't get me wrong - I love Janick. Just not when he butchers Adrian's solos.
The guitar tone and reverb-y production are integral parts of SIT for me. I can overlook it for one song like wasted years in their current set, but if they're going to do the entire album, it would sound weird...
I know this is a cover, but I can't get beyond the lyrics with Bruce's delivery style. Iron Maiden do not sing love songs (unless someone tragically dies or has an existential crisis midway through).
I think Maiden has become such a good business that Rod/Steve see no benefit to messing with the live set formula. Hate to have it boil down to that, but that's probably part if it.
I'm with Mosh and Knickerbocker on solos. Unless you're Vai or Satriani, I really don't want to hear a dedicated solo (even Yngwie...I saw him on G3 and it was pretty boring after the first couple of tunes).
I think audience participation depends on how it's incorporated. Actually...
Any of the "golden era" albums have to come first. I'd be pissed if weekend warrior received a live debut before flash of the blade or only the good die young.
That's an interesting venue selection as some are arenas and others (Martime Hall and Bogart's are clubs). I wonder what their attendance figures were like in those larger places.
Great post.
My wife equated the divergent/delayed GOT plot points to "If George Lucas spent 110 minutes on Luke on Tattooine and only 15 minutes of him on the Death Star rescue". Suspense is great, but they're not leaving much room for an adequate pay off...unless the plan is simply to...
LOL! Forgot about the pub!
Oh yeah, and then there's Janick w/family (photo from the Gers thread that linked to his family history). A bit easier for me to relate to. Steve's family probably had to be careful not to get hit by the portcullis in their holiday photo at the Essex place :p...
I love Steve...But my first thought is that his Essex house typifies a stereotypical 80s successful rocker house - huge & completely impractical, over-the-top, with gaudy/tacky decor that looks more like a museum than an actual home. How the heck did he raise his small kids there without them...
Good point. Even if Moon was there, I bet it would be a subdued/simplified performance (if he could play at all). Charlie Watts still performs well live, but the Stones are a completely differently different animal in terms of drumming dexterity.
I remember that they were scheduled to play a 975 person nightclub (the boardwalk) for TXF in Sacramento in the 90s. That gig fill victim to the 'allergy cancellation', but I had a friend who worked there at the time and he mentioned that initial presales were at only a few hundred so they were...
I saw The Who recently and Townsend/Daltrey are in their 70s - they were great, but they did do some extended breaks/instrumentals for Daltrey to rest his voice throughout, and their shows don't have the physicality/movement of a Maiden shows. I dunno...I suppose it's possible.
Part of the...
Realistically, I think they have time for one more album/corresponding tour and then the big farewell tour (given their current pace, those activities would probably take 3-4 years and I can't see Nicko going past 70). I can't see another history in the mix unless it's limited to a very short...
