As far as I know Maiden actually pay their support bands. But someone like The Hu will be much cheaper to book than a bigger band that would actually make the lineup stronger and help to shift tickets.

Agreed, the lineup is REALLY poor. Maiden could realistically ask almost any rock/metal band in the world and they would most likely say yes. I think the supports was more of a financial decision.
