I've been in Budapest for four days. It's been a whirlwind. (Hopefully this summary is interesting to some of you).
I arrived on Friday afternoon. I visited the House of Terror museum (which used to be the headquarters of the Nazis, and then the Soviets). It's a great concept (turning the headquarters of evil into a museum), but it could have been done better (too much overlapping media).
On Saturday, I woke up early. I walked to the train station at 6AM. It felt like I had the entire city to myself. I spent the day doing two hikes at Lake Balaton (the largest lake in central Europe). The first walk was along the tall hill overlooking Badacsony. I passed by several wineries on the walk back (it felt like this could have been Italy). I took another train to Aszófő and circled around the Tihany peninsula. The weather was spectacular. There were numerous beautiful viewpoints, but the highlight was the Tihany Abbey. By the time I got back to the train station, it was nearly dark. A small puppy kept me company. According to my phone, I had walked 38 km (and climbed the equivalent of 225 floors). I didn't get back to my hotel until after 11PM - an exhausting day.
On Sunday, I did a cave exploration tour. It was a great experience. It included wriggling through some tight crevices (while being supervised by a guide). I walked back through Margaret Island (which was pleasant). I walked another 19 km (mostly flat terrain).
Yesterday, I took the bus to Dömös (two hours in transit, including the subway ride). I hiked to the top of Mount Prédikálószék. I must have veered off-course at one point, and struggled on a steep, muddy slope. Eventually I got back on track and reached the summit (which provided an incredible view of the bend in the Danube River). I then took the bus to Visegrád and hiked up to the castle. I saw dark clouds wafting across the Danube, and I got caught in a torrential downpour on the way back. I walked another 24 km (and climbed 186 floors).
Today has been quieter. I did a tour of the Parliament building (an extraordinary, opulent structure). I saw the Shoes on the Danube monument, the exterior of the Dohány Street synagogue, and spent an hour walking through the central market. I'm only up to 16 kilometers (so far). I've eaten well (and tried many quintessential Hungarian dishes, including goulash soup, chicken paprikash, and pork knuckle).
I'm heading over to the venue in less than an hour. I hope I didn't tire myself out too much, but it's been so much fun exploring Budapest (and the surrounding area). And I still have three more days to go.
