Went to see Jon Spencer last week, he of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Knew the name, knew nothing of the music. Went because a mate was supporting. I'm now a fan, Spencer and his band were quite fantastic.
Saw Clutch recently too. Not so good. Quite a chill set compared to previous times I've seen them. Maybe I'm in the Play Classics crowd when it comes to Clutch.
And so on to today, Guns n Roses in Dublin. They will certainly Play Classics.
Coming up, Maiden in Paris and Def Leppard in Belfast. So Guns, Maiden and Leppard in the space of 3 weeks. What a world we live in.

That's not too shabby!
Following a couple of out of the usual gigs for me (the legendary Scottish punk rock and new wave band Skids and Taylormania, a Taylor Swift tribute band), I have Metallica x2 coming up. Two completely different setlists and great support acts (Gojira, Pantera)… What's not to like?

Today is the 45th anniversary when Iron Maiden played their first show here in Houston.
It was the Killers Tour and they were opening for Judas Priest.
I wish I could have seen that show but I wouldn't see them until Somewhere in Time for my first show

9 months ago I bought a ticket for myself to see guitar virtuoso Gary Hoey at Dosey Doe ( a small but cool Club just north of Houston).
Today I finally got to see him live for the first time.
I've been a fan since he recorded the instrumental soundtrack for The Endless Summer part 2 documentary in late 1994.
It is a crime he is not a household name;
he is that good.
He played a original tribute to Robin Trower, he played Hendrix and he also did his own Hendrix version of the Linus and Lucy song as well as his great cover of Hocus Pocus!
I had a front row seat and he threw me a pick!
I will post videos later.

Saw a reunited Melody Club as special guest for glam rock act The Ark in my local city park.
Framing the concert that way is enough I think. No band could open with three absolute hits and then continue to deliver just hits for 60 minutes, with absolute technical perfection. Synth pop/rock band which started out with the masterpiece album Music Machine in 2002. I've listened to them since I was 9-10 years old.
You might know them for their hit "Palace Station" from 2002, or "Fever Fever" (2006) as part of the FIFA 08 soundtrack.
Including quality footage from the last time I saw them live, december 2025.

I saw Metallica at their No Repeat shows in London last weekend and they were fantastic!!!
I have been going to gigs for 35 years and these shows are up there with some of the best concerts I have ever seen. I had seen them once previously, in 1999 when it was much easier to impress me, but back then they did not awe me as much as they did on Friday and Sunday. They definitely surpassed my expectations!

I would have liked to hear more songs off Master of Puppets, but it is hard to fault such great setlists and the effort of playing two completely different sets.
After such outstanding gigs, I think I will take a break from going to concerts until the November Manic Street Preachers/Suede co-headlining show so I can fully digest the Metallica onslaught.

Saw Crashdïet for the sixth time at Gröna Lund, Stockholm.
Swedish glam metal part of the 2000's revival, they're probably most closely compared to Mötley Crüe. They are not just another glam metal band by now; they are an institution getting past issues which would have destroyed other bands 20 years ago.
They played an extensive 17 song set, with basically all their hits and 3 new songs off their album Art of Chaos. And it was a gig well worth seeing.
Bassplayer Chris Young, the Brazilian Crashdïet-fanatic who moved to Stockholm and started already legendary synthwave-band Midnight Danger seemed to have the time of his life with this show and that energy was really contagious.
I'm less impressed by singer John Elliot who doesn't have either vocal capabilites or frontman charisma of their previous 5 self-combusting frontmen (of which 1 is dead and another is in questionable condition). He did an okay job, but hopefully the guy is more... balanced.
Admission to the amusement park Gröna Lund was about 10 USD for an evening ticket, and there is no separate ticket required to see the shows.

The same cannot be said about the weather the following day for Maiden's show!
We don't talk about the Sonisphere show. (I went home after Slayer... Took me 3 hours to stop shaking, even after a warm bath. I willingly skipped a Maiden show.)
7th August 2010, Bruce Dickinson's 52nd birthday. No taxi would go to Stora Skuggan because everyone was covered in mud, and the subway was closed due to HEAVY rain floods pouring into the entrances.
People tore down the fence to get out when we left.

Sonisphere Sweden 2010 is, by far, the worst experience I ever had at a Maiden show. The days before the festival the weather was gorgeous (I was with my then girlfriend, now wife, there on holiday), but heaven's opened on the day of the festival and the site was definitely not prepared for that.
I remember walking under heavy rain to what we thought was the festival entrance to be told by a very unfriendly staff member that it was the guests' entrance, and then having to try and find the peasants/general audience entrance being completely soaked.
I also remember taking shelter on our way to the entrance and hearing Alice Cooper's gig from a distance, without seeing the stage. Thankfully, it stopped raining by the time of Iron Maiden's show and we managed to see them, very far away, as the muddy terrain towards the stage looked very unsafe.We managed to get back to our hotel with trainers that ended up going directly into the bin.
As you can see, I am still suffering from PTSD.
I saw The Cult opening for Metallica during the And Justice for All tour. Met Ian Astbury in an empty parking lot taking promo photos on a motorcycle.I remember seeing The Cult at Gröna Lund back in 2010:

Nice guy it was a hot day and he gave us a couple of Heinekens.
