Finally watched this on blu-ray and thought it was quite good. A worthy follow-up that never had a chance of matching the original, but was about as good as you could have hoped for.
The film leaned a bit heavily on celebrity cameos, but the two main ones were used to great effect (Paul McCartney doing “Cups & Cakes”!). It also didn’t stay completely faithful to the single-camera documentary format, using obvious multi-camera setups in some inappropriate spots, and at least one mental flashback to the first film, but this is ultimately a minor nitpick.
Pleasantly surprised to see them give Break Like The Wind its due, and also surprised by the nods to the much less appealing Back From The Dead. Hopefully they’ll leave things alone after this film, though — it’s a nice end cap for Spinal Tap as both a band and a concept. Let it end on a high note.
Anyway, definitely check it out if you enjoyed the original. Also worth rewatching the original before watching this one, as you’ll catch more of the Easter eggs…
