I just put Godalming into Wikipedia and learnt that one of the notable people from there is Julius Caesar (1830-1878), cricketer:
Julius Caesar was born to Benjamin Caesar, a baker, and his wife Anne (née Bowler). Benjamin and Anne had seven children. George, Richard, Lawrence William, Ann, Benjamin, Frederick Bowler and finally Julius.

Surely if your surname was Caesar you'd call your first son Julius, a bit risky to wait until your sixth son. :D

Sunday, 29 July. English side Arsenal wins the Emirates Cup after defeating Italian giants Inter Milan 2-1 in the Final held at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal's home turf.  Arsène Wenger's team netted two goals courtesy of Alexander Hleb in the 67th minute and Robin van Persie, who sealed victory in the 85th minute.

Chavski is just an alternative name for Chealski Chelsea - on account of it's Chav like following (and players) and their extremely rich Russian owner.

I nearly split myself laughing yesterday. Elfsborg (a Swedish team) just beat some Bulgarian team in the UEFA champions league qualification games. Which means they get to play Valencia next. Which means they get creamed. Hahaha.
 
Sunday, 5 August. English champions Manchester United add another trophy, this time the F.A. Community Shield, into its silverware collection when it beat F.A. Cup champions Chelsea 3-0 on penalties after both sides were held to a 1-1 draw at Wembley Stadium, London. Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar became United's hero after he saved Shaun Wright-Phillips' shot, thus allowing the English champs to win the Community Shield.

The comment about three successive promotions made me laugh - yes, it was only the two. And the bit about perpetual movers has only really being relevant over the last 16 years - before that, they were stuck between the third and fourth tier since from the beginning (yes, OK - that is still yo-yoing, but be honest, no bugger notices any team yo-yoing between those two leagues).

But I must admit, Steve Tilson is right - they need to get into the habit of winning again. Apparently, they are one of the teams tipped for at least a play-off place but I shan't hold my breath but I do hope they at least mount a good challenge for promotion back up there to the second tier - Colchester just can't have all the glory of being Essex's top team (discounting West Ham here of course). :D

Yes - alternatively centre-forward or up-front. Strikers will be the ones operating nearest the opposition's goal and are expected to score more goals than the rest of the team.

I won't give a long report of Saturday's game (Bristol City 2-2 QPR), I'll just say it was a cracking game, brilliant support and I'm pleased with the result. City fans aren't the most welcoming though - we had a 40 man (+horses and vans) Police escort back to the train station, and then they messed us around there, so we missed our train back to London and subsequently my connection. Still a fantastic day.
 
I don't even feel that way about hockey.  Kinda sad to see football hooligans in full swing, still.  They're weekend warriors baby, they're weekend warriors sometimes...
 
At least us hockey fans are posting in the football thread! you don't see football posters in the hockey thread, do you?  :D

I have never seen any first-hand evidence of football hooliganism, though I'm sure there is an element of it in English football. There was no trouble at the match on Saturday - there might have been a few scuffles but if so they were isolated incidents, and the police escort was completely unnecessary. The worst you'll get from QPR fans is a few naughty words.  ;)
 
Still, there has to be some history there to bother with the police!  Or is it possibly your fans ;)
