Welcome to the World Cup of Maidenfans 2.0, the battle to determine the second best band in the world

Two years ago, Black Sabbath claimed the title by one vote over Judas Priest. Starting today, it will attempt to defend that honour as 144 bands face off in a two-part competition.

Part one is the qualifier. Bands will compete Survivor-style in eight brackets, with the top four bands in each bracket advancing to part two.

Part two is a March Madness-style tourney where the 32 bands that survive the qualifier will be seeded, then set in head-to-head sudden-death matches against the top 32 bands from the first World Cup.

Winners will continue facing off in head-to-head fashion until a champion is crowned.

The game opens now with the first group of qualifiers. Vote against as many bands as you wish. The four bands with the least amount of votes will advance. Each qualifying round will last for three days.

Avantasia
Coheed and Cambria
Corrosion of Conformity
Faith No More
My Dying Bride
Steve Vai

and I forgot to vote for Accept.

Too many votes for Golden Earring. Expected, though, pretty sure most of them are unfamiliarity votes.

Iron Savior are probably not making it, but it's good to see they don't get as much slag as some other artists.

Piet Sielck + Kai Hansen + Thomen Stauch ==> awesomeness in fast...
and in balladic form..
:edmetal:

I've heard a good 5-6 songs, including what Foro just posted. Not my cup o' tea.

I suspect unfamiliarity is also contributing to the number of votes for Corrosion of Conformity. Everything that happened between Deliverance and In the Arms of God is spectacular.

It's the case for my vote for it, so I really can't complain too much about Golden Earring votes.

I'm not up to speed on Corrosion of Conformity's catalogue, but this was one of my favourites songs of the '90s — like a grunged-out Thin Lizzy. The instrumental section kills.

The melodies of most power metal acts just don't have enough grit or soul to get me excited.
That Iron Savior stuff though is better than most.
The instrumental part of the first track is :notworthy:.

I listened to a few songs from every band and voted based on first impression. W.A.S.P got caught in my eyes in a positive way, I will check them out later tonight.

I know Albatross which is fucking awesome.
The others sounded pretty good too.
Filed in the bands I need to listen to more folder.

Coheed And Cambria
Golden Earring
Manowar

I meant to vote for Nirvana as well, but hit "cast vote" to quickly... :P
