Welcome to the Jong-Il

So, Germany has won the Eurovision song contest, and obviously the singer is being celebrated as if she found a cure for cancer. Which means that any other news are completely unimportant right now in this country. Germany apart, I know most people aren't interested in what is happening in Asia. However, I think that this may be of marginal interest to some, since both North and South Korea are going to participate in the Football World Cup.

Bitter polemics aside (I could go on with this for hours), it looks like something is going to happen in Korea. Here's a BBC article collecting various opinions from Koreans: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/asia_p ... 154787.stm

My initial observation was that something like this is happening every two years or so, apparently whenever good ol' Kim gets off his medicines or something. But this seems to be more serious than other recent incidents. What strikes me even more is that Kim Jong Il himself gets almost no mention in any reports. This makes me feel that the whole incident is just a huge North Korean scheme to cover up reports of Kim's failing health or maybe even death. Seemingly, if there is one thing that North Korea can't afford right now, it is a sign of their weakness. Even worse, I think the guys in Pyongyang are big enough nutcases to risk a war just because they don't know what else to do. Or maybe even to find a strong guy who proves himself able to take the throne become next Chairman of the National Defence Commission of North Korea or whatever else they call it.

Any thoughts?

Best. Topic. Name. Ever.

I'm definitely in agreement that this is the biggest crisis on the Korean peninsula since the 50s. I am wondering what is going to happen daily. The South Koreans went out of their way to ensure that they had evidence and international agreement for blaming North Korea for the sinking of the Cheonan before accusing them of the attack. Kim Jong Il is certainly out of the picture, in that he does not seem to be taking personal charge of this crisis.

I don't know if it's a coverup, but it could be suggestive of some members of the North Korean inner circle trying to out-politic each other in preparation for Dear Leader's death.

China doesn't want to take sides. They think the international research that was done, is not neutral.
Then what is a neutral research in this case? Their own?

I think they would wait out a conflict and try to deal with the victor. I think Kim Jong-Il may try to be testing President Obama.
