Venting my rage

This crap has got to stop. Anyone who has followed my posts over the last few years will no doubt be aware how I am a little more to the right, politically, than most people who post here. I often have found myself in the minority when I defend the actions/policies/”way of life” of Americans and their government. I think America is a great place which has done a lot of good for the world.

However, today I must speak up. As some of you in Europe might know, today (this very moment) the final match of the 2006 World Cup of Soccer (not football, dammit!) is being played. I’ve followed most of the matches, and am excited to see these two great teams (Italy and France) go at it for glory.

With the television package I have, I get three channels dedicated completely to sports. You’d think one of them would be broadcasting what is often referred to as the greatest sporting event on the planet. For most of the tournament they have done just that, they actually re-broadcasted the English broadcasts.
But what am I stuck with this time? I’m forced to watch the match on ABC, an American network. The picture quality is lacklustre, the commentary is being done by idiots who don’t know shite about soccer. None of the terminology they’re using is correct, and they are trying to draw comparisons to football (American football).

They’re talking about zodiac symbols of the coaches fro christ’s sake! They don’t show the same enthusiasm for the game that the English commentators do, and the accent is just plain bad (some weird variation on the mid-western drawl that I’ve not heard before).

To sum up – America’s great, but they should leave soccer to those who know it.

That makes no sense...At the same time he stays in America he should move to either Brazil or Argentina? Or am I perhaps misreading your post?

America is divided into two continents, North- and South America. The United States of America are often reffered to only as 'America', hence your confusion.

this is the 5th time or so that this duscussion has gone on here.

Once more:

For just about everyone living in North and South America, the following terms are used:

North America: Canada, USA, Mexico, and *sometimes*  Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama (although they are technically on the Caribbean continental plate)

South America:
The big piece of land south of Panama

America: 99.5% of the time refers to the United States of America.

Latin America: *usually* refers to the whole thing except Canada and the USA

That's it. One should refer to a country when talking about a country and to a continent when talking about a continent. -_-

You actually like the English commentary?  That's a joke.  They are entirely biased and buy into all of the hype whilst ignoring the nitty-gritty issues.
*sigh*  If only everybody listeneed to Eamon Dunphy :P

^_^ I really wonder why Mav didn't flame you for *this one* instead of the footy post.

Well since Duke doesn't speak Spanish, he is deprived of he insanely enthusiastic Latin American commentators, so the next best thing would be the English since, as he said the U.S commentators suck ass, and even if they have the terminology correct (ESPN did) they lack the enthusiasm and single-handedly kill the game.

The point I was making was that the English commentators are so bland and too nice to be commentating.  They don't criticise players or make examples of them.  They are fanboys of the English team, probably because they are out playing golf with them every weekend
