Twickenham Rugby question...

Living in the States, I'm not well versed on Rugby or the Twickenham thing. Does anyone have any photos or info on the team itself? Team colours, most bitter rivalry...things like that would be appreciated.

Twickenham is the home of the England National Rugby Union side. We play in white and our theme is "Swing Low".

The stadium has a capacity of 70,000 i think and is used for all of England's home internationals.

Gives you an idea of the size.

Persoanlly I prefer the game of Rugby League. It has different rules to Union and is played more in the North of England. It's a faster game with more emphasis on scoring tries.

Google Bradford Bulls and Wigan Warriors for some info.

Union is a bigger game in terms of world wide appeal.

Correct me if I am wrong but isnt American football derived from rugby?? In rugby yopu cant make a forward pass, you have to pass the ball behind you bu I guess the Americans were too impatient and wanted to hurl the ball forward fifty yards.

In rugby union the main player is the Fly Half who is reposnisble for kicking penalties and drop goals.

Hope this gives you some insight

I shan't get into a battle of League v Union, but personally I prefer Union. Better game. :P

As well as England home internationals, many domestic cup competitions are played there, as well as Middlesex sevens and the odd Varsity match. Sevens, by the way, is rugby union but with just seven players a side. This is really centred on speed and pace and as such, the match is only on for 14 minutes (or 20 in a competition final) and in competitions, each team could be playing two or three games a day. If ever you want to see pure running rugby, watch sevens.

Twickenham does not have a team so I can't give you the team colours but Harlequins are the closest you would get as they play only a stones throw from the stadium. As their name suggests, they play in a multi coloured shirt:

Their rivals, I guess, would be other London clubs that would also play in the Guinness Premiership (the top league of Rugby in England) - London Irish, Wasps and Saracens.

Sites that may be of interest:

Harlequins
Twickenham events (showing the Maiden gig).

Considering the two sports require widely different skill-sets, they just happen to use a similar ball?

And yes, we can make it an official rugby thread, if there's enough rugby fans...

Sorry LC, just a bit of harmless banter!! I'm of the understanding that football in the US is derived from rugby. I seem to have this little fact from an episode of Little House on the Prairie (!?!!?) Correct me if I am wrong.

Sure, the basic rules are...but the game has changed so much now that they're very dislike to each other.  Sorta like baseball and its relationship to cricket.  Somewhat of a similarities, but overall, rather different sports.

Could this become The Official Rugby thread.
It could do, but I think there is only three or four that would contribute.

And yes, good performance by England last Saturday - I knew they had it in them.
