85 is a baroque atmospheric piece that helps establish the atmosphere, but in context of the album at hand, it wasn't as necessary as something like the Hellion where it was far more effective. It's not as much of a waste as Ides of March but Tyrant could have easily opened the album. The fact that Prelude did not appear on some pressings says it all really.

86 has some great drumming to begin proceedings before kicking off with a solid metal riff which helps with the rampant and urgent atmosphere that it aims to create. I haven't listened to the Follow The Blind album, so context wise I'm unsure how it fits in, but it's a hectic track, and seemingly transitions into the final part of the album, a similar task Losfer Words did on Powerslave. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on this Blind Guardian fans. The ending is a bit too abrupt for me however.

87 has an escalating presence to it, which represents its source material quite well (erotomania being perceived as a delusional feeling), perhaps someone slipping deep and deeper into delusion as the musical tone becomes more and more refined, which is oxymoronic, but also a good representation of the sufferer's point of view, whilst also represent the turmoil in his life too. That's my interpretation of the song, and it represents its ethos extremely well, as well as just being a generally good song.

88 is a fun song and sounds good from an instrumental point of view, but other than that, there's little substance to it and just seems like a throw-away song. The yodelling comes to a point of being cringe-worthy at points also and is pretty annoying also.

85 and 86 are both OK instrumentals, but 86 serves a much larger purpose than 85 in the scheme of things and is generally a more worthwhile song.

88 is very much a mixed bag, but a mixed bag won't serve well against a very solid and all-around good Dream Theater instrumental.

86 and 87.

EDIT: Fuck, voted 88 by mistake. Could you count my vote for 87 instead?

Yeah Beyond the Ice (86) abruptly transitions into the final major song in Valhalla which starts just as abruptly (there's a song after Valhalla as well but it's basically a fun cover)

85 and 86 are basically the same in terms of quality, but 86 feels more like a song to me.

It's gonna be hard for me to vote against 87 at any point in this game. It's an incredible piece of music that encompasses everything on its respective album in a truly perfect way.

88...has cool guitar and a great groove, but that "vocal instrument" crap grates on my nerves.

86. Prelude is a cool intro but again, there's no reason to listen to it on its own. The BG actually stands alone as a cool song.

Can't believe I'm voting against anything on Awake but it's hard to beat Hocus Pocus. 88.

87-88 is the harshest matchup for me yet. I suggested Erotomania but I absolutely love Hocus Pocus.

Today I discovered that I like this piece of music on its own. Never tried before but it feels good.
It's a nice piece and it definitely works better on its own than Battle Hymn. I found that BG had more to offer though.

85 has great atmosphere and suffers less from not-really-a-song than similar tracks
86 should be the soundtrack for a chase scene. It lacks the signature melody that usually makes successful instrumental for me, but I'll give it the slight edge.

I react to 87 like I do to most of that band's work - smart but dull.
88 on the other hand is fun as hell. 88 wins.

I like Blind Guardian very much, perhaps even more than Priest, but I don't love that instrumental. Prelude sounds cooler.

I do NOT like Dream Theater very much, as they tend to be more consumed with showing off their chops than constructing a melody. Plus, their wanking gets very boring. Track 87 is no exception; I listen and say, "hmm, these guys re good musicians...yawn." That said, I like it better than the yodeling on Hocus Pocus, which I have long despised.

Prelude has a nice Classical (Baroque) touch, I like it. As Foro, I discovered it's actually a piece of music I'd separately listen to.
The Blind Guardian song has slightly sloppy guitar work and apart from the nice drum intro and some melodies, it's just a generic Power Metal track.
Vote goes with Priest.

I agree with Hick on Dream Theater. They're all great with their instruments but hella boring and there's too much of everything. The 4:43 part is really good but only for a short while. Everything changes too quickly, there's no time for enjoyment.
Focus Hocus Pocus Locust Donuts is not a song I'd listen to outside this tournament but it has a few pretty cool ideas and is more interesting than DT.
Vote goes with Focus.
